Google Maps update (no more Local)

Hi, since the recent Google Maps update, Local (an app I used a lot) disappeared. Anyway apparently it's been replaced by Google Explore and Google Services which are integrated with Google Maps on the Search menu.

However these cards do not appear for me on my Samsung Galaxy S3. Rumours this might be a US-only thing - I wonder what other people here are seeing; surely they wouldn't remove Local without some kind of replacement for international users?

On another note, any recommended alternative to Google for this kind of service?

Click on the search box and explore should come up. Works for me on my S3. It's not a U.S. only thing and works fine here.
