Well boys and girls, looks like the bus lanes are closed tmrw, DESPITE the Bus Drivers strike.

    http://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/ireland/gardai-stress-normal-rule-roads-apply-despite-bus-strike-602692.html

But the taxi drivers also usem them and they aint striking.

So? How many people use the buses to get in and out to work? Are they all going to be accommodated in taxis?

If the buses aren't running, the bus lanes should be open.

And what about all the other buses?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,390 ✭✭✭markpb

Also ambulances, fire brigade and the Gardai rely on those lanes to get around quickly.

There are different rules in the bus lanes. Some are counter flow. Allowing normal traffic to use them would be disastrous.

Are all the other bus companies taking up the slack caused by this strike? I'd doubt it. While the strike is on, private cars should be allowed use the bus lanes.

By the way, this strike doesn't affect me. I don't use public transport, and if bus lanes were open or not makes no difference to my commute to work.

24 hour bus lanes aren't open to all traffic after the buses stop running. Even where there are no routes scheduled to use them during the day (I'm looking at you, N32 ). What's your point OP?

N32, now R139 iirc hasn't been a bus lane for 3 or 4 years at this stage

Nope, the gards always wait up at the end of it catching people all the time. Fish in a barrel to bring in revenue when they are short.

The point is though, that we don't automatically make buslanes available just because there are no buses on them. The N32 example was just the most obvious example I thought of...

Its a favorite speed trap spot but the bus lane has not been in use for years. The bus route doesn't exist anymore.

They are not allowed to as they would need a license to operate on routes they don't already operate on, therefore they have no choice over the matter unless they want to get in trouble.

All other companies, such as Bus Eireann, Aircoach and other private operators are still running, as are taxis, tour buses and there are more cyclists on the road. Why should they have to suffer because DB staff are on Strike?

    why?

specifically private cars or other road traffic too?

as others have said what about Emergency Services, other bus companies, taxis, motorbikes, cyclists?

considering all the extra likely traffic clogging many roads on Tuesday it's even more important to keep such main arteries clear for the ES if nothing else.
Perhaps some people sitting in their cars going nowhere may even be persuaded to change to the bike when they see all that empty space going unused.

Yep, the limit is 60, but everyone does 80, so easy pickings. but it's not a bus lane.

I'm surprised people expected access to the Bus Lanes. There are too many spots around the city where road markings, etc on the Bus Lanes aren't designed to accomodate cars and would cause problems.

Noticeable increase in cyclists on my route in this morning, along with a few bits of the cycle lanes closed for road works. I think the expectation on opening bus lanes comes from previous strikes where they were open.

btw, a better example of a no need 24 hour bus lane is the N11 from Foxrock to Loughlinstown. It does have a reduced speed limit compared to the other lanes though, so not sure why anyone would bother.

That's not easy pickings, that's knowingly exceeding the speed limit. As for "everyone does 80", that's not true as I don't. If you match the number on the speed signs with the number on your speedometer then you'll never encounter and fishies in barrels - Works for me 100% of the time :D

Cycled into work, only took around 40mins - faster than a bus in morning traffic.

Somehow managed to avoid the rain too!

If you want to use a bus lane get on a bicycle, into a taxi or on one of the buses still running.

    It's that simple.

I head against the traffic. I noticed that the N4 inbound was busier than normal. Apart from that everything seemed ok. Although I think some people just took the day off. I expect it to be busier for the rest of the week.

I also think that bus lanes should not be closed, although I think that they should be changed to car pool lanes instead. So that cars with 2 or more people in them could use them. The vast majority of cars that I see have just one person in them. I just don't know if enforcement would be easy to implement.

It'd be no harder to implement than bus lanes really in enforcement terms. There may be an issue regarding penalties though.

Car pool lanes only work with a lot of enforcement. People have to expect to be checked and expect a heavy fine if they're caught otherwise they'll just chance it and screw up the traffic for actual mass transit users.

I'm guessin most of the people complaining about the bus lanes not being accessable are the same twats that dont actually use them out of hours when they can use them....but cant/dont read the signs...
