Just going to leave this here... :P

I really didn't like it. I cringed the whole way though it. Although, I can't pinpoint exactly why...

    Ugh... :P

Nah, it was an alright song. I just don't get the movie. I guess it was maybe a bit more target demographic focused than the show.

I just found some things strange. The animation seemed a bit, "off" too.

    That's not the Wondercolt spirit!

    C'mon, it had its moments.

The only bit I genuinely smiled at was the "Trixie" moment.

The whole high school thing ruined it for me. We usually get these great fantasy settings but beside for the whole "Crown" bit, there wasn't really anything else.

And the, "Let's make all the characters hate each other so it gives us a chance to develop characters that were already developed." Granted, it was meant to be a standalone piece.

The one thing that I hated about the release of the movie, was the blind admiration it received. Or the, "If this doesn't do well, we might not get more pony!" line of thinking. That's a dangerous road to go down. Let's not give Hasbro anymore power, please!

I can see it getting a spin off series. While it's not the fact they aren't ponies, it's the route it will go down. Instead of "epic" fantasy story lines, or even moral lessons, I can see it quickly changing to. "But which dress is better?!"

Overall, I liked it, but I didn't love it.
If it was compared to other episodes, It would be up there, but It wouldn't be that near the top.
I didn't mind the humanizing, but the whole high school thing is not exactly a great setting for ponies. Sunset shimmer wasn't a great villain either.
That said, credit has to be given to the writers (seems almost a cliche at this stage) for making sure it didn't turn out terrible like many of us thought it would.

Plus the fact that the crew wasn't really given any extra resources than a regular pony episode. Time was a big issue for them.

There wasn't anything horrible in the film, I just would have rather if the scope was a bit grander, in terms of story. Then again, I don't think the writers had much say in the basic plot. More along the lines of Hasbro saying, "We want a highschool, a ball, a crown, they have to be human, etc"

There were plot holes everywhere, but they were only one part of what made that other universe feel fake and paper-thin to me. I did enjoy it. I went into it with an open mind, and I came out of it pleasantly surprised and entertained. I think the makers did a good job with what was honestly a big, heavy demand.

I hope they don't return there, though. They hemmed everything in to the high school setting so tightly that the universe doesn't look like it'd withstand exploration. Twilight slept in the library. That's how little there is beyond the walls of the building.

Overall, I'm okay with it existing. It wasn't bad. If I see it on dvd I'll pick it up.... but then how long have I been saying THAT for with this fandom....

Anybody catch the comic con panel? They talked a bit about the movie, but what made it really awkward was there were a few of the executives from Hasbro there.

I only saw the season 4 animatic from the comic con panel, nothing about EQG. Any video links?

    And Hasbro executives you say?

    Quality is kinda crap.

The guy on the podium from Hasbro kinda irked me a bit.

I have no desire to see it and even less for my children too. They love love love mlp, but they are already overly exposed to elongated, doe-eyed, overly adult animated characters, high school setting is inappropiate IMHO, and just yuck. I bet there is some stupid 'love' story element too? Argh! No.

While there isn't anything actually wrong from a moral point with it, it isn't exactly something I would call great for kids.

The TV Show is great though. The movie was one big marketing campaign sadly.

And yes, there is a love story plot that goes no where. And a dress/make-up montage that, was one of the major bits I hated about the film.

From the bonus features of the DVD apparently. :pac:

I actually think the whole movie was an elaborate scheme to introduce Flash Sentry as a romantic interest. At least it'll reduce the horrendous TwiMac fanfics.

The crazy thing is, Hasbro are destroying the brand unwittingly. They are obviously trying to appeal to the masses with the various cliches, but are actually going to turn away fans.

It's just another example of a company not knowing their own brand.

It wasn't that bad. Anyone who hates it so much that they'll leave the fandom, well....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭swiftblade

I'm not saying people would necessarily abandon the show, but if Hasbro were just a little bit more market aware, they might actually profit more. I mean, just look at the toy line for the show. If they made show accurate ones they would make a killing.

I suspect though, that it's more down to stubbornness on their part. I mean, isn't it some crazy figure like 40% of their market is bronies, or even more? Yet, we see little in the way of merch that is directed towards bronies.

Ok we gave in and watched it. They enjoyed it and it was not so bad. A bit crap but kids not bothered either way. The older boy wants to reenact the cafeteria song and dance with his mates in school, all boys.
When they play mlp small boy is pinkie, girl is apple and older boy is rainbow. Saw the dr hooves animation the other day and they love it, hope more male characters next season.

I really tried my best to avoid this movie. I hated it even before I had seen it... well, I didn't hate it. I just really really really really really disliked it :)

However, my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to watch it a late Saturday night of boredom and a glass of wine :)
Turns out I didn't like it.

It was ok, but made no sense whatsoever. The girls are quite ugly even. Apart from Celestia and Luna :) I love the cuteness of the ponies and I love the fact that they are indeed ponies :D Also, when helping Twilight at the very end, the girls turn in to some sort of pony-humans. What's the deal with that?

I'm happy I saw it, now I know for sure I don't care for it. And I'm happy out as long as they don't turn Equestria Girls in to a tv-series, cos that would be totally eeeewww! ;)

Eeewwwww!! One movie is more than enough of that!
Why can't they just focus on making more excellent pony-stories? :):)

You're probably right, although I can't for the life of me grasp how that drivel could make a lot of money... :p

I still don't see why bronies would like something that doesn't have ponies in it :)

I think a lot of bronies felt compelled/obligated to see it, just because it had some connection to the franchise.

    (I love that video)
Anyway just saw the second 'that' movie. Not anywhere near as bad. Ok, somewhat near as bad but defo better. Also, dayum those dazzlings (fans face). Under our Spell seems deliberately aimed at the ahem, 'older, male demographic'.

But seriously, songs are much better than the first (although still pop-cheese in nature), visually it's stunning, 3 minutes of ponies I guess??, and DAYUM SUNSET SHIMMER AT THE FRIDGE IN HER PJ's ahem I mean, eh, sunset has a character this time, probably the best one in the film too.

Weak points are well, they're human/pony/demon spawn hybrids still, the plot feels very contrived at times (well it's MLP after all), Twilight is easily the worst character, does nothing, then realises every finale lesson ever still applies to this hell school i.e Friendship is all you need, and Panda's. Panda's everywhere.

Oh and why, why oh why can't they make my favourite pony into something other than the giant pain in the dick that is RD in this film. Like seriously, she is literally at fault for everything wrong in the band and does nothing to redeem herself at all. RD I love you, but damn writers keep pushing me away :(
BUT THEN HOLY **** RARITY IN HER SEXY NIGHTDRESS AND THE DAZZLINGS SHAKING THEIR HIPS AND TELLING ME I DON'T HAVE A CHOICE AHHHHHHHHHH THIS FILM FOR ADULTS ONLY PEOPLE.
    :P
