Thomas House presents a weekly games night in The Thomas House (86 Thomas Street, Dublin)

We kick off next month and it will be held every Thursday from 7PM till closing time.

We will have a range of consoles hooked up and will be running a different tournament every night. There will also be friendly games set up also across a multitude of consoles and systems.
Trading of consoles/games/accessories is actively encouraged!

Want to set up a stall for the night? no problem, just let us know ahead of time in the FB event or PM me here.

If someone wants to print up some flyers advertising the Arcade and Retro forum please drop them in so we can put them on the tables

Full bar and background music/maybe DJ on the night. Feel free to bring music in to play too!

Trying to create a centre for people to meet up and have fun together, please support us in this and share the event and let people know

Ah now, no fightsticks at a fighter tournament? It kind of reeks of being a noob tournament with stupid rules like no fireball spamming. If you want to get a good few people at this you'd want to advertise it in the fighting games forum and not have any silly noob rules.

Retro, there, ruining everyone's chance at a sneaky bottle of blotto.

    Sarcasm or a serious rant?

Its not a serious tournament. This is 100% for the craic. Ive done tournaments before and the lads with mental stick systems show up and ruin the beginners fighting chance. Original gamepads provided, prize is a bottle of hooch and the craic of playing with the gang.

Now for your end of the deal! look for recommendations for games (2 player mostly) across the systems.

    So far we have

    Playstation 2
    N64
    Gamecube
    Original Xbox
    NES
    SNES

and im hoping to source an Atari 2600 and 7800 at the moment too.

Soul Calibur 2/street fighter 2 anniversary for the ps2.
Mario Kart/mario party for the n64.
    Killer instinct for the snes
Just a few ideas, plus I can get a hold of these games
if you dont already have them.

Theres a Dreamcast in the mix too. Soulcaliber on DC?

If you have a 2600 then the absolute best game for multiplayer is Warlords. You'll need two dual paddle controllers to play 4 player.

    Bomberman on anything is great.

I'd shelve Killer Instinct, it was never a good fighter, there's much better on the systems you have.

If you have a Dreamcast then you have to play Power Stone. The original is better than the second one imo and it's two player instead of four.

Sure why not.I have house of the dead 2 if you want
more 2 player games for the dreamcast.

The DC is an absolute mine of great VS-fighters. Stuff like Marvel vs Capcom 2, Rival Schools, aforementioned Power Stone (not the biggest fan of it, but it's really made for multiplayer) and Vampire Chronicle would be my 'can't miss' picks.

Killer instinct was a good fighting game but im not gonna argue but if you happen to get a mame machine the arcade version is incredible.

good work, keep em coming. Im going to be sourcing these over the coming weeks. However, if anyone wants to bring them in on the night they will be welcome to do so.
All games will be kept behind the bar and signed out and signed back in again to stop stuff from walking out the door.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

Also taking recommendations for tournament games.
    thinking

    Mario Kart 64
    Smackdown 2 on PS2
    Micromachines on SNES

    What else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,997 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

The party-games on Super Monkey Ball 2 are always good craic, and I imagine they'd benefit with a couple of wagers and a gargle. It's very cheap too.

Oh, if you're going for 'rasslin games, it'd be best heading for something less sim-based like the PS2 games became, and try something arcade-y, like Day of Reckoning on the Gamecube. No Mercy's aged terribly, and it'd kill the crowd, I imagine.

    Worms
    Team Buddies on PS1
    Bishi Bashi Special
    Rise of the Robots (snigger)

I played at a retro games iron man recently. Found it a really dull game even for casual button mashing, was never good at it because I found it a terrible fighting game compared to the other stuff in the arcades. I'm sure it will be alright to stick on though when people have had a few jars in them.

On the subject of sourcing Dreamcast games, just in case you didn't already know, the Dreamcast plays backups as is. No modification needed.

CDRs would be handier for something like this than original discs. Don't have to worry about them :)

Ive got Super Monkey ball delux here for Xbox. Sonic Heroes got some decent 2 player action?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,406 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

To say Sonic Heroes has any redeemable qualities is akin to saying the same about Jedward.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

So its a winner then. Just looking at the stack of Xbox games next to me. I rarely play 2 player on anything these days. Cept Mariokart with the missus. Its all she can handle :(

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,406 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Sonic 2 split screen is decent fun if you want speed runs.

The control panels on both my cabs are two player. The only use the player 2 setup ever gets is when I'm feeling cocky and try to control both at once.

I don't know if that's hilarious or depressing :pac:

We all work monday to friday! and saturday and sunday too... Thursday night is a good middle man of a night. You can go out and play a few games and have a pint or a coffee and have the craic.

Probably going to miss this. Have to meet the client for the last time before we hand over the game at the end of the month then I've to run home and collect 'me entitlements!'. If I was hanging around in town later and didn't have to go home I would have made it in.

Well if it goes well ill be running it every Thursday. So hopefully we will see you down there at some stage!

AvP on the Jaguar is a must.

AvP on the Jaguar is a must.

But it's not a competitive first person shooter. You are wrong calling it that it's actually a horror adventure game with survival and micro management elements and physics based moved that just happens to be in the first person :P

Mario kart double dash on GC would make a great 2 vs 2 tournament.

It would be a major coincident if it was, as that's Thomas Moore's date of his death, he died of a deficiency in the head department.
