Too many models!

So I'm looking to replace my 3 year old HTC Desire as it's had much better days.

A bit lost on what to get next - reading the internets it looks like one of the Galexy S4, HTC one or Nexus 4 seems to be where it is at. But what of the many other cheaper models? What does one of those high end phones do that others cant? I should say that I don't plan to change phones very often, so I'd be looking for one that will continue to work well 2/3 years down the line - maybe an argument for a higher end model?

Also - what's the cheapest way to get a phone now? - Phone inclusive plans seem quite expensive relative to the Sim free ones, and particularly given I'm not out of contract for a short while more, tempting just to pay the bit more cash now (Nexus looks particularly appealing if going this way? - I'm aware there will be a number of hoops to jump through to get it in Ireland!) and then just go sim free when I am out of contract? Where online is the best place to buy sim free phones? Would have used pixmania before, but any other options worth looking at?
