Hi just bought a car yesterday booked it in for nct today as I need to get on the road asap

Looking through some threads here I'm now a tad worried about what my 50 quid will get me

Nct and tax are out since Feb..I have the vehicle reg cert ready to go off on Tue but am worried now I will only get an nct cert until Feb next?

I thought it was a bit strange the nct online booking took my card details without asking for name, address etc...

Are you the buyer? And the seller gave you the VRC/logbook?

You'll only get NCT cert until next anniversary (Feb) and not from tested date (Aug).
Your 55 euro will get you a certificate that the car is roadworthy. If the Garda catches you without it they may fine you or even take the car.

    Thanks for that

I'm the buyer. Log book in my possession about to send it off. Car had been off the road since Feb. What I don't understand is, last car I drove has been off the road since last Jul (2012) nct out since June 2012.
Gave it to my cousin who fixed it up and is selling it on with new nct till October 2014...? Doesn't make sense to me that my new nct would only last 7 months..

NCT is always done in connection to the anniversary of the first NCT it got.
For old car (>10 years) it's every year.

The reason it's not given from the tested date is that people would take the piss and not do NCT on time.

I get that but surely there has to be an allowance for when cars are genuinely off the road? Or if there's a change of ownership

I must ring my cousin and find out how he got a 15 month nct on a 97 fiesta!

You can test it up to 3 months early and get the cert for 15 months , if the NCT on the car is current.

Impossibru... the NCT will be valid to June 2014.

You can do the NCT 6 months early on its first NCT & up to 3 months early on
its second or any subsequent NCT.

So if your cousin did his NCT within 3 months prior when it was due again he would get 3 + 12 = 15

Thanks for clarifying that, don't like it one bit but at least i understand it now, starting to remember why I gave away my old car..

All the same was glad of it today when I couldn't get a bus anywhere!
