I bought a merc A140 a couple of months back. Its been running reasonable ok with a little rattle at low speeds. Then went to start it today and its started squealing like mad (like rubber against rubber) So popped the bonnet and started to look but as soon as i smelled burning I turned it off. I didn't see exactly where it was coming from. I jacked it up and seen the pic attached(don't know it you can see the belt properly in it). but its starting to break and rip at the edges. Don't know what it is . Has anyone any ideas as to what its for?

Its the drive belt for the alternator and air conditioning. Possible that one of the pulleys it run s on has seized causing the belt to melt

thanks for the reply. that would probably explain why the air con needs to be on full to even turn on. Hope it wont cost much to fix.

if its the fan speed you are referring to that will be a separate issue. If its not cold at all then it could be an issue with the pump but its unlikely, more likely would be low gas, Its really hard to diagnose over the net.

Is it a W168 A Class? I had the service belt go on that. Because the engine is such a peculiar shape, the mechanic dropped the engine and it was €300 to do it.

If you check out Lofty's A Class site you may get an answer there.

Poly belt gone. As suggested above, if you have a W168 Lofty's site is the place to check. It's like an unofficial manual, definitely beats Haynes on these cars.

Gives some info on changing it yourself. Chances are a garage will want to drop the engine as it's a b!tch to work in the engine bay. Very little room in there!
