Eircom charged you for the old poles, b@stards. I got poles off the esb years ago free of charge.
Just noticed it was the contractor, now what gives him the right to charge you for something that never belonged to him in the first place?

Overtime he might call it ! There was a court case here between a contractor and his employee and it put an end to buying any poles in the area but before that you might be lucky enough to get a brand new pole even if you were in the right place at the right time !

paid approx €15-20 depended on quantity for em. average 24ft long for std old P&T pole. odd one with a rotten end but majority sound all the way through

it is really doen to the fella's who are lifting em. its their money and not going to the Eircom, 'i think'!
    would 8ft be too short?

without doubt best strainer pole you can use esp in wet ground. we have em place 15 years in both wet and dry land. lifted a few lately for re-seeding/draining and good enough to re-use again. only thing is any new ones we are trying to treat the ends as the hearthwood has stated to rot up through the middle of the old ones, but even at that the posts are still good enough to point and re-drive and take strain.

got a few 'new' poles in the last lot. look the job but they are good bit wider. b*stard to drive into any kind of solid ground.:(

Esb changed poles around here a few years ago. Contractor parked his gear here for wend. Any pole he changed locally left in over my ditch ended up wit 15, serious strainers can get 4 for single strand or 2 gate posts and a strainer. Some of the poles are super long

Well the landowner owns out to the middle of the road so any pole on the side of the road is on someones property.

You would get a 10ft creosote treated post for the same price ,pointed and all,put in to a meal bag and push it down

You'd get 2 or 3 posts out of an ESB pole, simple enough to point em with the chainsaw.
I'd be slow to put any post in a plastic bag, it'll fill with water and never dry out.

Found that any of the home grown timber used for posts has a very short life span compared to the slower grown imported stuff eg. phone/esb poles
