i brough a suit for a wedding that didnt come with a waistcoat. I would like to wear one.
would it look stupid to buy a waistcoat colour matched as close as possible to the suit?

It is ok if you buy the waistcoat separately but keep in mind that the colour should be matching atleast 90% or more of your original suit. If there is a huge difference in the colour then it won't look good at all.

    I'd go the other direction....

It is very hard, if not impossibleto match a waistcoat with a suit after the fact. And if it nearly matches it will look wrong, as if you either were trying to match (but failed), or drycleaned the suit a few times but not the waistcoat. You may get lucky, but I doubt it. Even cloth from different batches will look slightly different (same problem with paint, wallpaper or tiles - have you ever seen a wall where tiles were used from a different batch -).

What I would suggest would be to find out what your partner (if there is one) is wearing and buying a waistcoat to match their predominant colour. There are a wide range of waistcoats on debenhams.ie and you will have a good chance of colour matching their outfit.

If you are going on your own, then pick any colour your like, as long as it isn't too close to the colour of the suit.
