Clutch issues

Someone was driving my car down a very steep hill on Monday - when she got to the bottom there was no parking spaces and she had to turn it around.
Unfortunately the clutch is still letting of a stench today. Im hoping it will cure itself but im guessing that its probably hours not days or weeks before the inevitable happens.
Its an 04 Passat - possibly the original clutch in her since new.

Is there anything i can do to save it or might the problem disappear
    .
    any thoughts gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks

Moral is don't loan out your car .

with a bit of luck should be gone within 48 hours if its only slight slipping burn

Clutch stench is wicked and depending can sometimes last days sometimes weeks but eventually will should go away
    .
The problem is clutch if its good for 100,000 to 150,000 kilometers this will reduce clutch life possibly by more than 50%. A replacement clutch from 500 to 1000 or more could have made that a ~200 to ~800 Euro mistake and instead to replace clutch in say 2015 you might be doing it in 2013.
Being a 04 car chances are that 80% clutch was used up before the problem and the rest that left is not much so your probably in cluch replace time soon if not this week .New clutch will get rid of the stink for sure .
Its not impossible the clutch was close to dead anyway and just chose that car park to let you know

Sometimes if the clutch is over heated it will buckle and make high spots and this will keep the plates burning away for few weeks until either the high spots are removed or the clutch plates wear too thin and its new clutch time .
Thais something that normally requires something stupid like towing large trailer up steep hills and it goes pear shaped.
Some small cars have known issue weak clutches meaning they cant take much abuse .

Look your make up on the net and see if the re is known clutch issues
