network unlocking an sgs2

I decided to give my sgs2 away to my mate. (He's with O2)

The phone was originally a 3 Ireland phone, but I decided to flash an official o2 Ireland firmware from sammobile onto the phone before I give it to him (assuming that it would be unlocked to O2 then)

Odin flashed the foirmware without any hassle, but he tells me he's unable to register on the O2 network now.

im assuming the phone, even with an irish o2 firmware must still be locked to three?

Anyone any advise or quick fixes?

Should ijust root the phone etc?.

    All help appreciated.

Sorry to say but doing what you did certainly didn't unlock it, you have to be rooted to unlock it.

    Ah Ok.

So, scenario is. .... I'll download what's needed to root it tonight, bring laptop into work in morning.

Run Odin, root it. .... Then use my phone as a wifi hot spot download app you linked to..... Hey presto?

Unlocking is on a level below the OS. Firmwares do nothing to the network lock.

If you want to save hassle just get the unlock code from three. Presumably youve had it long enough to have spend 130E with them so there wont be any problem getting it off them, just takes 24-48hrs.

Did darkys rom etc not used to come as network unlocked as default?

Three won't unlock it for me as it wasn't mine to begin with. It was a hand me down from some one now in Australia.
