Best bet would be to contact aviva and ask them.

if it is a comprehensive policy on your car all those named on your policy are covered comprehensively

This is generally the case, but there are exceptions. Best contact the insurer to make sure.

When you have your own policy you normally have third party cover to drive other cars. When someone is actually named on the policy they have the same cover on that car as the person with the policy but don't have cover to drive any other cars.

The insurer can reduce the cover available to named drivers, particularly if they're a higher risk than the policy holder. This should be detailed on your policy schedule. The booklet is a standard document issued to all policy holders as an information source and won't be specific to your policy.

    Again, usually but not always.

If you can't decipher the policy documents, ask your insurers. Please note you will have to have the insurance certificate, the policy booklet and any other endorsement documents the insurer issued you with to understand the totality of your contract. These documents will of course only explain your contract, not anyone else's.

For safety, please ignore the "generally this" and "sometimes that" and the "well mine says" answers.

I hope that's clear, for the 107,932,546th time read all the documents, ask your insurer, read all the documents, ask your insurer ...

The Aviva policy document kicks off with a section entitled 'Loss of or damage to the car' and the only qualification based on the driver at the time is that they will not pay for damage to your car if the person driving it at the time is over the alcohol limit. It doesn't say that they will only pay for damage to your car if the policyholder (and not a named driver) is driving at the time.

So from my reading of it, the policyholder is covered for damage to the car as long as the person driving the car is insured under the policy and they aren't done for drunk driving after the accident.

On the perennial response in this forum to 'ask the insurance company', remember that the bottom line is that the policy document rules and anything you are told over the phone can be denied afterwards based on the fact that the policy states in all cases that the policy document rules.

Apologies for the emphasis but it can't be emphasised often enough that even if you get the name of the call agent that you speak to, what they tell you isn't worth the paper it's written on - if you get my drift - so it's not worth calling them to ask for any kind of clarification.

    RTFP.

Even if an employee was silly enough to put the response in writing, it still isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Aviva: This policy booklet, the information you have provided and the schedule form the contract of insurance between you (the policyholder) and us (Aviva Insurance Limited).

The implication being that no other written or spoken matter can vary the Ts & Cs of the policy.
