Would it be advisable to go for an Automatic even if its a 1.3 are they known to give trouble?

Based on the plentiful amount of info you have provided,

    computer says yes.

Depends on the car, history etc ..

I can say that I had 2 1.3 automatic Mitsubishi Mirage's and neither gave me any bother whatsoever. I've also had 2 automatic Passat's and now an A6 and they all run fine too

I wouldn't consider anything under 2l for Auto. Even that's pushing it tbh. A 1.3 auto will drive like a pig.

Thanks for the feedback lads but I was looking at an add for a 02 Honda Civic 1.3 Petrol/Hybrid?

    Again it depends on usage.

I did a N-road run in my Mitsubishi's every morning for a year without an issue - yes they weren't rockets and this was very noticeable with a few people in it, but if you're buying it for mostly driving around town then it's be fine.

Automatic transmissions has come a long way. They're usually as solid as manuals.
Is there any particular reason you considering AT? Comfort, disability?

Grand and it being a 1.3 would that break down to a 1.6 petrol in fuel consumption?

Personally I wouldn't fancy one. I would imagine there being much more strain on the AT in a 1.3. There is more than one reason the yanks drive big AT horses.

How so? Is there more strain on a manual in a smaller car?

I drove an auto micra for a few weeks once. It was no worse that a manual micra.

If it's a hybrid then it's a completely different type of auto (CVT), which would be perfectly suited to the hybrid.

Agreed. Around town you can't beat auto and I suppose you don't need a decent sized engine for city driving.

I've driven a 1.0 automatic for the last five years, and it's completely fine - never had any problems with it.

Yeah. Fair enough. I was thinking more about performance then reliability.

Civic hybrids weren't automatic till the current model I would have thought.

Even in terms of performance, it's fine - both around town and on motorways. Having driven a manual version of the same car, I can't say I noticed any difference.

Sounds like a hateful concoction IMO, Ive been in a C3 Auto and it felt dog slow and laggy.

Ive had 3 Honda civic's, all autos and they were great cars and never gave any trouble at all.
Not had a hybrid but you can only get them in auto's i think,
Automatic transmission has come on a long way in the last few years.
Ive alway driven auto's for nearly 30 years due to an accident and i've had loads in that time and i never had any issues at all.

I think we're coming at this from different perspectives.
