    Hi All

On the way into work this morning and smelled burning in car. Pulled in and open bonnet and there was smoke coming from area around belt. I am a real thicko when it comes to cars. I dipped for oil and it seems low. Do you think this might be the issue or is it more sinister. I have attached photo pointing out area. On phone so no great quality pointing :-) Its a 2002 ford focus saloon petrol.

    Many thanks for any help

from looking at the photo , it could be one of the pulleys on you alternator belt seized , that's where i would check first .

    Air conditioning compressor possibly.

Possibly seized and burning the belt. Was there any screeching, smell of burning rubber?

You wont get a true reading of the oil level immediately after stopping. You need to let the engine rest a while.

Air con was making funny noise the past few weeks. Do you think it's safe to drive with air off. Also, might this be an expensive fix. Thanks for replies.

No, I would'nt recommend driving it That belt drives other units including the water pump, so the possibility of doing more serious, expensive damage. You need to get a proper diagnosis before doing anything else.

I second Dieselbug's advise , get it looked at by a mechanic before driving as you could do a lot more damage if the air con compressor is seized

Was it raining when this happened and was the area around where the smoke was coming from wet? If so it could be just steam but I would have it looked at to be on the safe side.
