Is it true that the passet 1.9tdi have great engines but the do have some problems with wishbones ect cause the engine is to far out causing stress on the car? It's just that I have heard that they have a great engine but the do have other issues. I've heard the jetta would be a better buy? Same engine but less other problems

    Which model Passat?

The typ 3B ('96-'05 models) has a multilink front suspension setup which is prone to balljoint wear. They drive very well when in good working order though. It's the same setup used on the Audi A4 and A6.

Seems like you've been listening to too many bar stoll mechanics!

The have a decent reliable engine in 1.9 form and have a great suspension set up (for crusing and comfort) the problem is when the suspension components such as arms need to be replaced people replace them with cheaper spurious options which don't last long and end up needing replacing sooner rather than later - thus giving the set up a bad name amongst the bar stool mechanics :D

In fairness, the Passat is the only really well minded car that suspension just broke on that I've ever come across. In more than one occasion. It's dangerous and on one of those occasions almost caused a serious accident. They are a crap design. That's the B5 and B5.5 ones.

If it got as bad as you claim, then the car was not well maintained. The balljoints give ample warning when they're dying (clunks and rattles all over the place) and a good mechanic should spot this in plenty of time to replace them.

The suspension design is excellent IMO, it's just that the balljoints let it down when they wear.

Doesn't sound like a well minded car at all to me.
