Hi folks. :-) we normally leave our gates open and at the moment I'm using a rock to keep the one without the ground rod open. I'm looking for a better solution. I've seen gates with a little hook thingy on a pivot down at ground level to keep them open. the ould cobble lock is getting destroyed having to move the rock out of the way. any idea what it's called and where to get one. ?

I know the sort of thing you mean although most of the ones I have seen over the years always looked 'homemade' if you can't find one what about a small wooden post in the ground with a hook and staple arrangement?

You will generally get them in a Farm or Agri Store. You can even get a self locking type when you push it open.

I think the self locking is what he meant most of the gravity/cantilever ones are aren't they?

    To the OP.....

    A small length of PT 3 x 2 or 3 x 3 wood,a stainless hook screw and a bungee cord.

    Problem solved.

    OR

buy a galvanised drop bolt lock in an agri/diy/builders providers store.

Screw it onto the bottom of the gate.

Then get an SDS drill and a 12-15mm SDS masonary bit and drill a 4 inch deep hole into the ground at the point where the gate is opened its furthest.

Now you have 2 gates with drop bolts and ground holes........both gates can be opened and secured in the open position.

    Simples.
