Pat Kenny is to leave RTÉ and will take up employment with Newstalk, ending a 41-year career with the national broadcaster.

Mr Kenny was the presenter of numerous highly-rated news and current affairs programmes in RTÉ across four decades.

He wasn't rubbish he was excellent at current affairs

Will this mean a reduction in the price of a TV licence?

Free Tv licences for all now, miniature newstalk flags for some...

He has moved to Newstalk, just heard it on the news.

Strange one. Must be a fairly sizable pay-cut. Wonder what slot he'll be doing? I'm guessing Tom Dunne's.

Newstalk ratings will soar, Kenny does a very good radio show.

He was far from excellent and was totally biased in favour of Fianna Fail, did you ever watch "the Frontline" or any of his political programmes, he basically ran them as advertising propaganda for the Fianna Fail party.

Best radio broadcaster in the country and the only one on Montrose Farm worth the big money

    well done Newstalk

Hopefully. Can't stand Dunne and his stupidly overdone nice-guy routine

    He's just semi-retiring.

Sank their candidate in the presidential election...

I liked Pat, his radio show was intelligent and well researched. However, I'm sure he'll be replaced by somebody horrendous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,750 ✭✭✭iDave

Will be 'replaced' by existing RTE staff I suspect given its incestuous nature.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Mountjoy Mugger

It's all these pay cuts for God's sake.
    His salary was €630,000 in 2011, €729,604 in 2009 and €950,976 in 2008.

    Enough is enough!

I like his radio show, I never took to him on TV though. It's a pretty surprising development!

Claire Byrne is having her baby soon, so a few Prime Time vacancies there now.

What's the newstalk frequency? Is it on TuneIn Radio App?

One less Roger Mellie at Montrose.

I'd imagine that they are currently scouring the canteen to find his replacement.

I can't agree with you there. Apart from the Late Late Show, he is a brilliant interviewer, with a wide knowledge of current and political affairs. His radio programme is second to none.

Aspiring radio presenters should keep an eye on job bridge now.

Pat is a millionaire already I'd imagine.

The salary is irrelevant at this stage.

He'll be presenting a weekday current affairs show on Newstalk - 10-12.30 according to RTE.

    He was our Princess Diana!

Newstalk? Krap. That's two stations I'll have to avoid now.

Is his producer going with him I wonder?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,678 ✭✭✭I Heart Internet

Sure Miriam O'Callaghan can fill in for him on his radio slot till they find an alternative.

Apparently he lost millions due to the collapse of the banks. A lot of old wealth was destroyed by the banks going bust but you never hear much of it.

Hope Myles Dungan gets Pats Radio show

I always thought Ivan Yates would return to Newstalk after his stint in the UK. I have listened to PK for over 10 years what a shock!

More likely to be broke considering his property investments.

I wonder what show he will get? Newstalk Breakfast? Tom Dunne morning slot? The Right Hook's slot? Fionn Davenport's After Dark sex advice slot?

I never watched / listened to him on ARR TEE EE.
and I won't on any other station... Overpaid cardboard cutout

It's the Tom Dunne slot. Newstalk confirmed it.

About time. However knowing RTE, God knows who will replace him.

If the show is from 10 -12.30pm then the Lunchtime slot must be changing too.

I believe Pat, along with Gay Byrne and Mike Murphy lost huge amounts in the crash. He may own valuable property, but not much disposable cash.

It will be good for RTE that he has left. It will finally expose the old lie that these individuals themselves pull in listeners. Rte could stick anyone in there in that spot and as long as the production and research team stays the only thing that will be different is the sound of the presenters voice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 750 ✭✭✭Pretty Polly

That will shake things up in Montrose a bit. No harm either!

I'm a Pat fan. We have the radio on at work for Miriam and even for Ronan Collins:eek:, just because of the Pat Kenny show and the News at One. There's no longer a reason to tune into Radio 1 between 9am and lunch time.

I'll be moving over to News Talk if PK takes a slot there. He is in a different league to other current affairs presenters. Always impressed by his ability to think fast against an obfuscatious politician or even legal experts, e.g. William Binchy recently.
