    The way I'm reading it is this

    Hide a tile anywhere on the bike. Bluetooth Range 50-150 ft. Bike gets nicked lets assume its miles away, if any other tile user comes within 150 ft your tile sends message with GPS coordinates home to cloud server, your app picks it up and you get it's location.

    As it lasts a year, you've got up until that time for any tile user to get near it.

    It's a great idea, but it'll need a pretty large user base to be successful at retrieving bikes. And hope that user base travels near wherever the bikes are being taken.

    On the plus side, it's so cheap, there's no reason it wouldn't take off.
