Hey does anybody know much about the Undergraduate Awards?

I have seen a few links about the place and online http://www.undergraduateawards.com/

Has anybody ever submitted anything to it or heard any feed back?
I know submissions are closed for this year, I am looking into it for next year. Is there much of a point of it , in the words of Fr Ted, is there any monetary value or just to show you are great?

    Thanks

I applied for it last year. Was a finalist in the Law category but didn't win.
I'd definitely recommend it. Even if you don't win but get shortlisted, you still have a great line on your CV, especially if you're interested in doing a postgrad. It shows your able to do quality research and it was a big help when I was applying for funded PhDs.
If you win, it's even better.

    Hi Lockstep.
Can I ask a couple of questions, purely out of curiosity?

What was your essay about? Was it an essay that you submitted as part of a module? Were you surprised to be short listed? If submitted originally as part of a module, did the essay get a first? When did you hear that you were short listed? Were you, to the best of your knowledge, the only law student from NUIG law to be short listed? Actually, now that I think of it, the overall winner was from NUIG, so that answers that.

    Cheers in advance.

I applied a couple of years ago, then found my PDF essays on Scribd.com when I googled my name one day. I requested for them to be removed and the UA woman said that they had rights to it because it was in the T&Cs. I said that I thought they'd have rights only in the case where I won something. She removed my entries from their Scribd profile, but there's thousands of them still up there.

Just something to think about re: plagiarism if you'd be concerned - that was my main issue.

    What was your essay about?
My essay was about international law and the protection of aid workers during armed conflict.
Was it an essay that you submitted as part of a module?
It was indeed, it was my year long essay for my LLB.
Were you surprised to be short listed?
I hadn't really thought about it to be honest. Applying is very easy so I sorta forgot about it, until they contacted me again to tell me I'd been shortlisted.
If submitted originally as part of a module, did the essay get a first?
Yeah, it received a first alright. My friend who was shortlisted the year before also received a first for his essay although I do know people who have submitted first class honours essays but didn't get shortlisted so it can vary a lot.
When did you hear that you were short listed?
I really can't remember to be honest.
Were you, to the best of your knowledge, the only law student from NUIG law to be short listed? Actually, now that I think of it, the overall winner was from NUIG, so that answers that.
Nah, there was another NUIG law student who was shortlisted, although neither of us won (a UCC student did) but an NUIG student won the Law category the year before.
Even though we didn't win, NUIG's Law School seemed very supportive of it. Both of us who were shortlisted had a short bio written about us which appeared on the Law School's page as they seemed fairly happy that two of their students were batting it out with universities like Osgoode Hall and Durham. I was fairly happy about that as well as it means that if an employer googles my name, the article will appear which makes me look good.

As has already been mentioned, your essay will be published online. That didn't bother me at all as it means there's more people reading my work which doesn't do me any harm.
