Tempted by this, got a couple of bags of royal canin for my dog from PetMania and that's nearly empty so might give them a go. Sound for it op

Decided to give it a go. I ordered 3 12kg bags of Royal Canin so that I was spending over £70 for the free delivery and total came to €118.10 after putting in the discount code and recalculting shipping by pressing the recalculate shipping button.

Paid by Paypal, so if there is a problem I should be able to claim back the funds.

I had previosly bought cheap bags from Petfactory but ran out the other week and had to pay €62.99 in Maxi-Zoo:eek::eek:

But why are people buying royal canin in the first place, it's really dear and there are many better cheaper foods? My pet food is way better than it for our cats and is much cheaper.

    What is your pet food?

I always thought that too but recently had reason to put two of my cats on royal canin. Vet explained to me how it was much better for them and said he would bet I am spending much more on my current cat food than I realised because of the rate the cats get through it due to lower nutritional value compared to royal Canin

I was amazed to find he was spot on! The cats love the royal canin and it fills them much more quickly which means they eat a lot less volume wise compared to the whiskas, go cat etc. Costs more to buy initially but because the cats eat less of it I am actually saving money, also they waste absolutely none of it. Delighted I changed and would never go back, it really has been an eye opener.

By no means am I saying royal canin is terrible, it's jsut that there are foods with a lot better ingredients for the price.

At the moment this is on the way to me:
    http://www.zooplus.ie/shop/cats/dry_cat_food/porta_21/feline_finest/170966
They have a good cheaper one too, the stats on this one are:

    Ingredients:
Ground chicken (64%), chicken (9.15%), chicken fat, dried potatoes, dried brewer's yeast, beet pulp (sugar removed), cellulose, MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides), FOS (fructooligosaccharides), dried cranberries, green tea extract.

    Additives:
    Nutritional dietary additives:
    Vitamin A (24,570 IU/kg), vitamin C (43.76 mg/kg), vitamin D3 (1706 IU/kg), vitamin E (tocopherol) (157.5 IU/kg), vitamin B1 (thiamine) (17.85 mg/kg), vitamin B2 (riboflavin) (12.75 mg/kg), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) (5.78 mg/kg), vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) (9.24 mg/kg), vitamin B12 (cobalamine) (110.25 mg/kg), biotin (325.5 mg/kg), selenium (0.53 mg/kg), iron (321.36 mg/kg), manganese (116.95 mg/kg), folic acid (1.63 mg/kg), niacin (30.45 mg/kg), taurine (875.25 mg/kg), zinc (296.49 mg/kg), choline chloride (240 mg/kg), copper (copper sulphate) (42.24 mg/kg), sodium (0.53%).

    Omega 3 fatty acids > 0.58%
    Omega 6 fatty acids > 4.05%
Contains EU-approved antioxidants: preserved with high tocopherol content extracts from natural sources (vitamin E) and L-ascorbic acid.

protein fat fibre ash magnesium moisture
    47.0 % 21.5 % 2.5 % 9.9 % 0.1 % 7.0 %

I also have gotten animonda (until recently I got 12kg for 38.90, now its 10kg, cats lick the bowl like mad after its all gone, even hours later)
    http://www.zooplus.ie/shop/cats/dry_cat_food/animonda
Also very good. If you look at ones at a similar price to royal canin like applaws (still cheaper than royal canin), look at the ingredient difference:
    applaws wrote:
Dry Chicken Meat Meal (min. 47%), Dry Salmon Meat Meal (min. 19%), Dry Potato (min. 4%), Poultry Oil (min. 8%, source of omega 6), Poultry Gravy (min. 4%), Salmon Oil (min. 3%, source of omega 3), Beet Pulp (min. 3%), Dry Whole Eggs (min. 3%), Brewers Dried Yeast, Cellulose Plant Fibre, Minerals, Sodium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Seaweed/Kelp, Cranberry, DL-Methionine, Potassium Chloride, Yucca Extract, Citrus Extract, Rosemary Extract.
COMPOSITION: dehydrated poultry meat, wheat, animal fats, maize, rice, maize gluten, dehydrated fish, hydrolysed animal proteins, wheat gluten, chicory pulp, fish oil, minerals, soya oil, dehydrated tomato (1%), marigold extract (source of lutein) (0.06%), hydrolysed crustaceans (source of glucosamine), hydrolysed cartilage (source of chondroitin). ADDITIVES (per kg): Nutritional additives: Vitamin A: 14100 IU, Vitamin D3: 700 IU, E1 (Iron): 37 mg, E2 (Iodine): 2.9 mg, E4 (Copper): 13 mg, E5 (Manganese): 49 mg, E6 (Zinc): 162 mg, E8 (Selenium): 0.04 mg - Antioxidants (natural extracts rich in tocopherols: 120 mg). ANALYTICAL CONSTITUENTS: Protein: 35% - Fat content: 20% - Crude ash: 7.3% - Crude fibres: 1.4%.
The royal cannin has loads of filler, 'Note that maize, wheat etc. are common cheap fillers and a cause of cat food allergens; honestly they should not be part of any quality dry food you see.' and that also there are better ingredients/meat/amount of protein in the others. 47% vs 30%.

Heya your vet is right, royal canin is much better than the likes of gocat and whiskas, however so are all these other foods, and they are better than RC too. RC would be considered low on the "good food" list. Thing about vets is they seem to have deals with royal canin to stock and promote it, I imagine they get paid. I can always choose my vets to pick up free bags of royal canin in their offers etc.

You're completely right about needing less food, it extends beyond RC, for instance my cats need 20-40g only of that porta 21 above and they much prefer these foods. A bag could last a cat 6 months. Whereas you'd be buying the cheaper brands all the time.

Ordered three bags of Royal Canin for two Dalmatians at the end of August.
    Arrived today 5th/9
Bargain 96 euro for the three bags delivered free plus discount code.
Was a small hole in two of the bags, don't know if this affects it.
Would have cost about 180 euro in local pet shop.
    best before may/2014

    How can they manage this?

I agree. Vet recommened royal canin for my cat too (i'm sure they get commission :P ). It's very pricey and i tried it for a few weeks. Better than Go cat etc but definitely don't think it's the best. Cat's litter was always smelly etc and she wasn't too well on it stomach wise. Tried James Wellbeloved which is kind of mid range and found it far superior and the cat loves it. Anytime i try other cat food now, she turns her nose up at it unless she's starving

A friend sent me a link to this site ages ago and the analysis of the likes of Royal Canin should open your eyes, especially considering the price and the fact that vets promote it.

Compare that review to this one for Orijen.

Just had a quick look at the Royal cannin review, do they have a more recent one? That one is eight years old.

I've had cats all my life that live long good lives, bring them to the vet every year and always happy with their health, fed on scraps and lidl/aldi cat food and not a bother on them.

    Am I missing something?
    Their price: WAS£91.63 NOW£54.98

That ain't a bargain.. Zooplus has a standard price on a 10kg bag of cat food at 60 euro. 55 pounds works out about 64 euro.
Where did they come up with the previous price of 91 pounds??

Thanks OP - will try them next time I buy Dog Food. Agree re Royal Canin. It's miles better than the crap you get in the supermarket but there's much better out there.

For whats its worth I feed my dog with 'Nature Diet' wet food - great stuff.

    Apologies Noxin.

That was the price for the 3 bags delivered in Euro
