They are quite reliable, a few known issues revolving around electronic steering wheel lock & depending on the engine (if its an N47) there is an issue with the timing chain but have a look at the service history or check with BMW Ireland to see what work has been done on it

Good MPG 40ish city up to 65 on the open road and they can go forever if you keep them maintained

Best of luck anyway looks like a good price

Might be worth clarifying if it's an E46 or and E90... I drive an 05 E46 for example and there are plenty around. Have you got a link to the motor in question?

Oblig difference between N47 and M47 engine post coming up...:D

Won't be an N47 engine in that car OP, worth clarifying if its an E46 or E90.

True on that one re the engine, my bad N47 only from Sept 2007 onwards

Mate has an 06 one and not a days trouble with his (If of course its an E90)

Ive an 05 320d(E90) since Feb last year and have only had a couple issues with it. Single stage resistor went on me stopping the air con and leaking rear shocks(although I blame horrible speed bumps for that instead of the car).
Love the car in general though. Good MPG, pretty comfortable and has a bit of power too. All in all its been pretty clear sailing with it.

I have a 2006 E90 320D, have it nearly two years now and it's been a pleasure to own / drive. In two years, I've only needed to service it (more regularly than the on-board CBS recommends) and only had two minor issues with it. The first was a noisy alternator pulley, so replaced the whole alternator and the second was a split in the overflow fuel filler pipe which would result in a small diesel leak when the car was brimmed with fuel. All the rest of the work I've done has been completely optional although I would recommend removing the swirl flaps for blanking plates instead, and ensuring that it's fitted with the newer vortex type turbo breather oil filter.

The OP needs to clarify if it is an E46 or E90 that he/she is looking at as both were sold in that year. They both have different variants of the 2.0 diesel engine. E46 has 150bhp and the E90 has 163bhp, E90 is slightly better on fuel also.

If anything, I'd be working on the assumption that it's an E46... He's hardly getting an E90 320d for €5650, is he? Would have thought they'd make more than that?

Your probably right but it depends on the condition, spec, etc. The jaded ones are starting to fall into that price range these days. He won't be buying an E46 coupe at that price anyway.
