Rear cog problem

    Hi.

I've a problem with the rear cogset on my bike. When I'm in the 5th cog I feel what I can only describe as a rough vibration through the pedals. This doesn't happen in any other cog, and it doesn't matter what chain ring I'm in at the front. I'm thinking there's damage to the 5th cog. LBS couldn't find anything wrong. Bike has done approx 500km.

    Any help/advice/experience gratefully accepted

That's an unusual one. I've never come across an issue like that. It doesn't sound like a cable tension issue as you said the vibration is coming through the pedals. Did the bike shop not hear the noise that you heard. If not, why? Remove the cassette and look for damage to the cogs, and replace the cassette if you see any damage

Nope, they didn't notice anything out of the way, and they checked it twice on 2 separate occasions. I've inspected the cassette myself, and can see nothing wrong. I always figured that if I had to take it off I'd just replace it to hell to it. Looks like my only option now.

    Thanks for your reply Muckers

Strange one all right. Put the bike on a stand and have a close look at what is going on in 5th gear. The obvious thought is that the cog is bad somehow but you say that's not the case. My only other thought is that the cassette has spacers and that it was assembled incorrectly (i.e. spacers all installed but order mixed up around 5th gear).

Final thoughts - 500km suggests a new bike. The supplying dealer should be able to resolve something for you. If this dealer is the LBS you are going to, maybe you need a new LBS ...
