Do you know if they take this history into account? Would it be an automatic decline?

I'm sorry but if your medical history shows a pattern of depression it will go against you. The Medical Officer will look at the potential for lengthy absence from work due to recurring depression etc. The upcoming recruitment campaign will one of the most competitive ever and they will be just looking for excuses to eliminate applicants.

I will be applying to ags and have a history of depression also. I'm hoping this isn't used against me.

I'm afraid anyone with a persistent medical problem will have that taken into account. You will have a period of time as a Trainee Garda and then be on probation for a further period. If you incur a steady number of sick days you will be referred to the Garda Surgeon and your suitability for a permanent position will be considered. I'm sorry but that is the way it is now. No employer is going to take on someone who will e running up a lot of absenteeism. As soon as you present a medical certificate with depression on it as the cause of your absence the alarm bells will start ringing in the HR section.

I mean I have overcome depression and gotten better. Just hoping my past depression doesn't go against me.

Everybody in life has their ups and downs. If you are satisfied that you have got over the bad spell and are not on any medication then certainly I don't see why this should even be raised. As the upper age limit is 35 a person could have a health issue in their late teens that wouldn't be an issue 5/8 years later. I think that you should go for it once the applications are being sought. Have a good read of the application form though and especially any questions relating to health. But if it is no longer a problem then leave it behind. Good luck

That's the thing though I am on medication and probably will be for some time. Let's hope it doesn't affect my application.

Still on medication here also but I am a stronger person now. I don't intend to have sick leave which is depression related again. Obviously I cannot predict the future but my depression was mainly post natal and feel I'm in a better place if knowing myself and how I am and that can only help fight it off

Do you have to give past medical information? Even if it was just a spell of depression? Where do they get the information from? I don't have the same doctor my visits are non existent so I wouldn't be getting anything from mine.

Far as I know you have to give the last five years medical history no matter what doctor you have/had. It all has to be accounted for.

Depression will raise a massive red flag IMO. Given the nature of the work, shift pattern etc.
It's not the most mental health friendly environment. Add the possibility of financial pressures and work/life balance being upset it could be an issue.

I'm going to have a job to remember all this along with addresses etc if I get that far
