Extensive Dental Work on Medical Card

    Hello,

I am looking for some advice regarding getting extensive dental work done via the medical card.

I have had various health problems during my early 20s which involved intensive chemotherapy and a transplant. A couple of years ago i was at my dentist and they advised that there was alot of work to be done due to tooth degradation from said therapy.

This was done via the medical card, they applied for some sort of special dispensation that they applied for.

Recently i was back at the same place and it was a different dentist that i saw.
Some work was done at the time and they mentioned that this was the limit allowed on a yearly basis by the medical card.

    So my question is.

Can i get this special dispensation regarding dental work again or is it just a once off treatment?

    How should i proceed?

I realise that this is a fairly substantial wall of text so 1 appreciate any replies on my situation.

Sound like a job for the Dublin or cork dental hospital.

Sound like a job for the Dublin or cork dental hospital.

Thanks, The last time, my previous work was carried out by my previous dentist, is this not possible anymore?

Also, would i be able to get this special dispensation for more work again like last time which is probably my main query. The first time(few years ago), it was mentioned to me that they would apply for it and they completed extensive work at the time.

At my last visit(Jan this year), i was told that i had reached my quota for this year and it was not mentioned about contacting the HSE to get the go ahead for any extra work and they did actually mention that some extra work would be needed. This is probably the main reason why i am wondering if its even possible to get it again.

Regarding the Dublin dental hospital, i imagine that i would need a referral for that, would it be from current dentist or one of my consultants.I was in the Dublin one before while i was undergoing treatment and it was arranged by my consultant at the time but all my dental work over the last 3-4 years has been done by or through my local dentist.

Again, sorry for the long winded post, complicated or what :o

You're dentist should be able to get special approval for additional treatment due to your medical history as you would be considered to have special needs. Alternatively contact your local HSE dental clinic and get the address for their principal dental surgeon and then write them a letter outlining what to have said here.

I would ask your transplant coordinator. The're so helpful and can arrange for the consultant to refer you if this is necessary work. It's very common to have teeth problems for patients who've had transplants, often to the medication they were on prior or after the operation. They often get referred to a dental hospital.
