I did read the story, but come on they had to kill a 95 year old man, who quite possibly had dementia at that age,

I think it was way over the top.

Police hadn't released the cause of death; one can only imagine old age played a part.
    RIP to all involved.

How hard could it be to overpower a 95 year old?

Yes a bit of an over the top reaction from the police, but then american police have a very low tolerance of crappy behaviour, so yes he could have been over powered easily, but he had a knife and whether is being wielded by 5 year old or a 95 year old it can still kill...

thats what I was thinking? Sure, good self defense used by an officer would have been suffice? if he was a danger, could they not have cordoned off the area he was in, even using riot shields they could have advanced on him and overpowered him.

Probablly served in nam or korea . Or WW1 and WW2 or all of the above . Could have killed many men with his bear hands . Would you take a chance 😳😁

    The police were utter cowards.

The force was ridiculously excessive but your post is deliberately misleading. I'd be nervous around anybody with a foot-long butchers knife but would be entirely unphased by a frail old man with a walking stick.

American law enforcement is completely out of control.
It's become very paramilitary in almost every state, IE even for non violent minor offenses like drug possession or e-crime fraud, the preferred method of dealing with people is to smash down the door and sent in 20 guys in full SWAT riot gear and guns, yelling and shouting and making a gigantic scene to get one alleged non violent criminal.

I'm sure I'll get attacked for saying this but c'mon, we've all seen the videos of such ridiculously over dramatic arrests. Cops over there seem to think that every single raid on every single house, no matter what the alleged offense, should be treated like a raid on a mafia godfather's lair.

    It's really sad :(

Would have just been born when WW1 was ending.
But he would have been alive for all the events from 00:45 onwards..
To get tasered in a nursing home..

Although he may or may not have been interested in many of them..

its possible he had alzheimers or dementia because elderly people do not get nursing home placements or have what is termed challenging behavior for no reason.
anyone who gets pissed off releases more of the stress neuro chemicals which makes someone a lot stronger than they are usualy.
american police have killed many autistic and learning [intelectualy] disabled people mostly for far less than threatening challenging behavior, due to falling and hitting their heads from tazering and other police over the top reaction with methods that shoud never have been used on them such as head locks, hog tieing and sitting on them which restricts breathing.
its very wrong but unfortunately dont be surprised about this, the cops have an awful record for it and do not get the same level of disability training that gards and english police do,though some specific PDs choose to be better trained.

being in a nursing home, the staff shoud have had restraint training and challenging behavior training, its wrong that it ended up a police matter,it coud have been solved by staff.

Exactly, I appreciate their patience with the walking stick, the metal shoe horn and the whole atmosphere in general. Though, when a butchers knife was produced they cleary had to act, I think it was just very slightly cowardly to simply taze and bag a 95 year old person. Im pretty sure a chance taken on hand-to-hand, of the level that those officers would undoubtedly be trained to, would have easily sufficed.

If the staff had of restrained him and got stabbed or hurt themselves in some way there would be a big inquiry and then if they had tried to solve it and hurt the man or he died while they were trying to disarm him then one of them could be done.

Yes the cops could have gone in with shields and tried that way but even that could contribute to his death and people would be on saying police brutality.

What do people want to rap them up in cotton wool?

If this man was put in a padded room and locked up people would be on about his rights.

Deal with it people crazy sh1t happens and that's just the type of world we are living in.

There are something like 11 million arrests in the USA every year including about half a million for violent crime. If the preferred method is to assemble a SWAT team that's a lot of SWAT teams. I would say that the dramatic videos are not representative of the norm and only get published because they are in fact out of the ordinary.

I remember a case not to long ago where a son and mother were having a dispute she rang the police they called to the house and 3 officers lost their lives due to her son being a absolute nut who had armed himself opened the door and shot 2 of them in the head they hadn't a chance and got another that tried to assist the 2 officers down.

America is nuts just thank god we haven't so many guns here.

Too old to be Tasered, even brandishing a knife. They can be quite trigger happy on
the Taser over there. It's become a lazy way of diffusing a situation.

who has a foot long blade without taking a significant risk? Really hard I would say. Sounds like they tried all the non lethal options they had.

He was threatening paramedics and staff with a cane and a metal shoehorn when police arrived at the complex, they said.
That part is a little suspicious. Assuming that he didn't have the knife between his teeth you'd think they could have easily subdued him then.

Hands, arms? Meh. He has a constitutional right under the 2nd Amendment to bear arms.

I cant help but think that if that was to happen here it would be sorted out with no violence or injuries by the staff, or the unarmed Gardai.
Of course having 15 stormtrooper pointing guns at someone is going to have an agravating effect. Why not just lock the door until he passed out? No harm, no foul.

Standard case of suicide by cop. US police do not just tazer you right off. They repeatedly, clearly and loudly tell you that unless you do as they instruct they will tazer you. There is no way the old man did not know he would be zapped. he had a knife, he didnt put it down when orddered to do so, he got zapped, he died.

God help you if you are deaf so!

But really that might be fine for most people but a 95 year old man might not be able to comprehend the instructions, the police should have left it to people who are trained to deal with it
