Well the first thing you should be asking is.

    Is she competent.

If not get her to so a course and they will supply her with one once she pass's

    Just throwing this out here.

A certificate of competence is not a pre-requisite. If she held a training license or similar before now that will act as proof of her competence.

It the reason i intend to get the young lad licensed as soon as he turns 14. So when he turns 16 he has two years of being licensed on my firearms meaning no course, and also i'll know he was shown the right way how to safely handle a gun.

I would prefer that she complete the COC, then apply for the training cert. I will also get her some shooting instruction as well,to get her started right. Will try Dessie Halloran, thanks for that.

Chrisban, do you shoot yourself?, if so take Cass's advice.
I'm a qualified NRA instructor in rifle, shotgun and pistol and to tell you the truth these are only very, very, very basic courses. They deal with first shots on target.

    Exactly.

I've been showing my young lad the ropes for years, exactly how i was taught. To immediately check, and clear a gun when handed one even if he is told it's empty. How to hold, clean, disassemble/reassemble, point only at what you shoot, never wave a gun, and all the other basics.

I bring him out whenever i can, and put him through the paces when it's quiet. My intention is that when he hits 14 he will be more than capable of holding and using a gun (in my presence). I'll then get him licensed, and when he turns 16 he'll have his own guns, and be good to go. While i'll worry about him i know he'll be well used to guns (not a novelty) and well able to handle them so it's peace of mind for myself.

Much like driving. My Father taught me to drive. I then went for a few lessons, and when he seen/heard how the instructor was teaching me he cancelled the lessons after only two. He continued to teach me and i passed my test first time round.

I've seen the courses myself. They cover the absolute basics and even then it's one sided. I've seen a course where only shotgun was shown, and there were lads there doing it for a rifle license. They passed, and i assume got their rifle.

The COC is a joke imo.
i sat for it myself and also had to sit in with a few lads when i was club safety officer.

It is the type of course someone who had absolutely no connections with fieldsports and no common sense should be doing.

The instructor i had sat in my house for 3 hours, less interested in it than i was

i think if i was in op's shoes id just get the girl on a training cert and teach her the rights and wrongs in the field, instead of from a program on a laptop.

Its the same as the theory test really.just because someone has a cert to say theoretically they can shoot/drive, does not mean they can

How do you go about getting someone on a training cert.

Apply using the FCA1 as normal, and input your details for the license holder on he gun.

Bit more detail but that's the general gist of it.
