Dark wall colour in a small snug room

Want to turn our small room into a warm snug room with TV and open fire. We're putting panelling on the lower half of the room. We have painted the top half a warm coffee colour and have cream/ light brown carpet. Would it be ott if we painted the panelling a darker colour than the wall paint? I fear if we deviate from the top half colour then the walls will look really split in two and look too busy.

Any examples of where its worked would be great too!
