Hello all. I'm 16, and next week I'll be going to my first submission wrestling class. It runs for 90 mins twice a week. As the first class is free, I saw no harm in giving it a go. Has anyone any advice for a first-timer? What should I expect out of it?
Also I might check out the local boxing club, but I'm not sure thats going to fly as my eyesight is quite bad. Anyway, thanks in advance.

Hey, Great to hear =) Submission wrestling will do you well, all grappling/full contact classes are usually 1h 30mins ,take it handy in your first class, if you have a rash guard wear one otherwise a T-shirt and loose shorts would do fine. You'll be learning how to fall properly (Break falls) Learning different positions, Take downs, Throws , Learning different Grips and a few submissions -maybe a choke, arm lock, shoulder lock or leg lock. Grappling is really good fun and it will keep you fit.
    Happy Training =)

My advice would be to cut your toe and finger nails before turning up, if you need a shower then have one before training and if you have a gumshield, bring it.

If you get to try rolling then remember that it is practice, just relax and don't try too hard.

    Good luck and enjoy.

Have fun would be the first thing I'd say.

Second to that just remember that everything worth doing takes time or hard work or both.

I started MA when I was 15 and it took a few years to find the right teacher - (this was before the interwebz). Anyway at that age I think the best thing to do is cultivate a flexible, supple and strong body and push yourself to be the best in the club you are in. And definitely go for the boxing :D

Also be prepared to travel to train with good people. I see so many people who just want a "convenient" local club no matter what it is.... Extend your horizons to get good training .. cycle, bus it, scrounge lifts!

A typical medical for boxing in something like a charity event would check you eyesight. Though how bad your eyesight is affects the results. I imagine if you've -14 in each eye it might be a problem!

Between -3 and -4 atm anyway, hoping to improve it.
