My 8 yr old desperately needs to upgrade his old bike, he's just become confident riding it.... long story!

Anyway hes about 4ft 7 ish and growing like a weed, we happened to be walking past a halfords today so popped in for a look. Salesman recomended that he goes for a 26" wheel and a 14" frame. Does this sound okay, and does anyone have any recommendations? I'm heading to the UK next week, so be able to have a better choice.

Try this store, will post to Ireland,

    Good quality bikes.

I bought an Islabike Luath 24 recently and I think it's absolutely fantastic. Far above the spec that you'll buy in a shop here in terms of weight, which is very important for children. They're not particularly cheap, but if it's kept in any sort of reasonable condition it should sell itself secondhand in a matter of hours. I would recommend them to anyone.

When I was buying, Islabikes had stopped delivering bikes to anywhere outside of the UK. This may or may not be in force still, I'm not sure what the rationale for it is. I used Parcel Motel to get it to the ROI.

Great advice, thanks. They look great bikes, expensive but quality.

I'm guessing they are pretty hard to find second hand!

Seconding others. I bought an Islabike for our eldest when she was 4 off lots of recommendations. It's been passed down to number 2 and is definitely well made. They hold their 2nd hand value from what I've seen.

Very hard to find second hand in Ireland, and sold very quickly.
