Tax after marriage

    Hi

    What is the best way to set up your tax after you get married , keep it as individual assesment or joint,

    we have 3 kids ,

    Is there somewhere I could go or phone to see whats the best option

    It really depends on your individual circumstances i.e. if you're both earning and what you're earning. This Revenue page has lots of information and examples. You can be jointly assessed as a couple and move your credits and srcop to suit your circumstances or leave them as is if that suits better. When you contact Revenue to tell them you've married, make sure and tell them how you want to be assessed and how you want the credits and srcop to be allocated because if you don't they'll give the transferable credits and srcop to the assessable spouse which could result in a nasty surprise for the other spouse. The assessable spouse is the spouse who is nominated by the couple to be chargeable to tax for both spouses. It's usually the higher earner.

    In the year of marriage, they'll continue to treat you both as single persons, however at the end of the year, if it transpires that it would have be more favourable to treat you as a married couple, they will reassess you after year end.
