Whats your favorite Christmas movie?

Well I loved the Santa Clause movie when I was younger and still do.
I also really like Love Actually because it has a countdown to Christmas and it shows the up's and downs people can have in different circumstances. The best part is how everyone's story ends up connecting together at the end at the concert.
So, whats your favorite Christmas movie?

I love the Santa Claus movie too. I love the innocence and magic of it. It makes me pine for the days of believing in Santa and the magic of Christmas Eve.

I always enjoy Elf too for some reason.

    My own favourites would be

Santa Clause the Movie (the one with Dudley Moore, in case I have the title wrong)

It's a Wonderful Life (sad and happy at the same time)

The Nightmare Before Christmas (hybrid Halloween and Christmas movie I guess)

The Muppet's Christmas Carol (hilarious and one of my fave versions of the story)

Scrooged - Bill Murray gives one hell of a performance here

The Muppets Christmas Carol - Everything is brilliant, the humour, the in-jokes, the songs and of course Michael Caine.

Disney's recent animated Christmas Carol (the one with Jim Carey) is pretty good as well. :)

Ashamed to say that I haven't seen it yet :o

Thanks for reminding me though, I'm about to order it online :) I don't have the courage to go into a shop in August and by it :o

    Why??

Why do you care what others think??

I love loads of the ones already mentioned, especially The Santa Clause, Elf, and The Grinch. Surviving Christmas is another favourite, I love Ben Affleck!

I also always seem to end up watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (both versions) around Christmas. The older one reminds me of being small :)

Every Christmas Eve I watch The Muppets Christmas Carol. I also really like The Holiday. I think I need to expand my Christmas movie reptoire though, there's piles of stuff I haven't ever seen!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 269 ✭✭bellinter

    Has to be Home Alone

Christmas Vacation, Wonderful Life good too.

When I look at these lists from America, "A Christmas Story" is nearly always around the top spot... its rubbish though

    I've quite a few faves :)

    It's a Wonderful Life
    The Santa Clause
    Elf
    Love Actually
    Scrooged
A Christmas Carol (1999, staring Patrick Stewart amongst others)

Not quite Christmas movies but amongst my favourites to watch at Christmas:

Planes, Trains and Automobiles. It's only when you realise Del Griffith's true situation at the end of the movie that you can piece together everything that went before it.

Groundhog day: Another stellar Bill Murray performance

    Hmmm... Probably:

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Clarke Griswold at his very best (And worst!)
    Muppet's Christmas Carol
    Elf
    Scrooged
Die Hard / Die Hard 2
and for that good old child-at-christmas magic, Santa Clause The Movie.

    Gremlins
    Die Hard/Die Hard 2

    It's a Wonderful Life
Scrooged(I love when she slaps him around):D
    Bad Santa
    Muppet Christmas Carol
    Polar Express
    Jack Frost
    Christmas with the Kranks

I like most versions of a Christmas Carol.

    In no particular order:

    1) Planes, Trains & Automobiles
    2) A Christmas Carol {recent Disney one}
    3) Saving Private Ryan*
    4) The original Star Wars trilogy
    5) Home Alone 1
    6) Uncle Buck
    7) Cool Runnings
    8) Full Metal Jacket*
    9) Castaway*
    10) Die Hard {original trilogy}

*not Xmas films, but for some bizarre reason I just associate them with Xmas!

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,754 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

I always associate The Sound of Music and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Christmas because they were always shown Christmas week. Both aren't seasonal at all though, they just make me think of the festive season!

Ugh, how could I forget Willy Wonka?! Vintage Xmas material right there. I havn't seen the remake yet, not particularly inclined on watching it either...

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,754 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

Yuk! Cannot believe they dared to remake that. I've never seen it either and don't intend to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,251 ✭✭✭Pang

The remake is dire. Never watch it.

I love watching Dr Zhivago as well as Oliver at Christmas. I just associate them with that time of year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭Uriel.

I'd be the same... I have lots of actual Christmas movies that are faves, but also ones that I just associate with Christmas such as Die Hard 1, the original Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder is brilliant) and a few others.

God I love Christmas... Can't wait!!!!!!!!

    Home alone 1 and 2
    Micky's Christmas carol
    Blackadder's Christmas carol
Harry Potter 1 (Not a christmas movie but it makes me feel Christmassy!)
    Die Hard
The Mighty Ducks 1 and 2
    The Santa clause

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,273 ✭✭✭✭TommieBoy

I haven't seen many on everyone's lists... The Santa Clause was fun. I can't remember seeing Love Actually or not, so it's on my must-watch list!

Someday I'd like to see Christmas in Connecticut, White Christmas, and Miracle on 34th Street (new and old versions)
...but I've never had a desire to watch It's a Wonderful Like. :o

Holiday romances are my fave watch-overs: A Holiday to Remember, If You Believe, The Bishops Wife and The Preachers Wife.

My fave films set in the season are The Holiday, Last Holiday, Bed of Roses, and While You Were Sleeping.

National Lampoons and Santa Claus the Movie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,070 ✭✭✭Tipsy McSwagger

My favourites are the usual, Home Alone 1&2, Die Hard 1&2, Muppets Christmas Carol. One film I like watching at Christmas is Hook. It's a really flawed film but for some reason it's brilliant and a bit magical to view at Christmas.

A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim. :)

These are the ones I'll be putting an X beside on the Christmas RTE guide.

Willie Wonka (it may not be set at Christmas but it IS christmas)
    National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
    Scrooged
    The Polar Express
A Christmas Carol (the Patrick Stewart one)
    The Snowman
The Gruffalo (and since last year The Gruffalo's Child)
    Christmas with the Kranks
The last 5 minutes of Die Hard.
10 minutes in the middle of Harry Potter
