I'm looking for a fuel injection guy in Dublin. I have a MK1 Golf GTI thats not running right at all, it's been to three mechanics and nobody can identify the issue, so I need the injection system looked at to see if that's the problem.

Anyone ever use McNamaras in Dublin 3?

    Cheers.

I've bought an accelerator pump diaphragm for a Weber carb from them a while ago. So can't really say I've used them. Having said that it looks like the sort of place that would know their stuff.

Sean murphy in green mount motors Harold's crosswould be a better bet , he does a lot of old Mercs that use the same Bosch systems, mc namaras would be last resort for me.

why not bring it to somebody who specializes in vw's?

Cheers, I'll get in touch with Sean Murphy and see what he thinks.

It does start, but won't run really at all, it's been at a VW specialist but getting a known working metering head is a problem. I don't want to buy one (if I could find one), just incase that's not the issue. That's why it needs to go to a fuel injection place.

Thanks for the help so far!

It's a Bosch K-Jetronic system, which aren't too hard to diagnose, once you have a fuel pressure tester like this one, and a good book like one of these: Link Link.

It's relatively rare that the metering head is no good, more likely that the system pressure or the control pressure are wrong, which can be sorted out by adjustment (re-shimming a valve) or by testing and replacement of other (cheaper, easier to get) components in the system.

Assuming that a part needs replacement based on looking at/listening to a K-Jet engine is virtually impossible (except for a few particular symptoms, like delayed warm re-starts) - the only way to get the right diagnosis is to get someone with the right pressure tester who knows how to use it, and who knows how to understand and interpret the readings it gives.

Bit of incite there, thanks, you seem to know about these K-Jet systems. It's finding that person I suppose that knows their stuff and can diagnose the issue. Went down to Sean Murphy today but they were closed, I'll give him a ring Monday.

I had an appalling experience with them a few years back. They took a year to repair an ignition/immobiliser fault on a Peugeot 406.

I really hope I don't have to use them so!

Definitely will be avoiding them, thanks!

Spoke to Sean from Green Mount Motors, he's gonna take it in a few weeks whenever he has space/time to get it in. Hopefully it'll get sorted there.

I had the opposite experience. I sent up a Weber 32/32 DGV Carb that was "not right" (primary choke working sometimes, other times it would stop). They stripped the carb, found the body warped and a gasket partially breaking down (and was drawing air as a result). They rebuilt the original carb (as I want it for originality) and jetted a new 32/36 DGV for me to fit my engine spec. Turnaround was 2 days. They phoned me twice during the two days to let me know of how things were going etc. I did get somebody to deliver and collect the offending items.

The carb has been on the car now for a few years and it's running sweet since.

Give Alan a ring, if he can't help he might be able to recommend someone ;)

Yep, have used Hamiltons several times, excellent place! Not sure this is their thing but I'll ring them alright and see if they can give me another option. Cheers.

My experience with NcNamara was atrocious. They doubled their estimate, damaged the car and it was worse on the way home than ever. They were lucky they were not sued.

    Avoid !!

As Type17 says these systems are simply a selection of components that all herd to work together and DIY with some cheapish equipment is very possible.

I would also recommend Sean Murphy though !

The K=Jetronic system is tricky to set up if you don't understand it,but normally the things to check first are air leaks , ie the injectors have rubber seals that could of hardened, the fuel distribution unit has a big rubber seal beneath it that could be worn ,the airflow meter might need resetting or could be damaged ,there's a lot more its a process of elimination.
