Dirty Diesel

I added 30litres of bad diesel into the car yesterday Car got noticeably louder. Car cut out at lights today and wouldn't start without 6 or 7 goes of the ignition and I headed straight for the mechanic. The ratio of good to bad was 50:50

Anyway not that worried. Tank was emptied and apparently there was water in the diesel or something like that. Im not 100% sure.

Cars now filled with good diesel, some diptaine and has a new filter and its running way quieter and smoother. Thankfully, fingers crossed no permanent or expensive damage.

Moral of the story saving the few cent in a cheap fuel retailer ain't worth it. €60 worth of diesel gone and another €60 to refill plus the new filter and €9 for the diptaine

How prevalent is bad diesel in Ireland? Anyone else been stung with it recently?

Don't buy off an independent garage, stick to the big brands.

Changed when I feel it needs changing (every 5k miles max)

Fuel in the tank shocked me though

Better to avoid old garages rather than independents as all fuel is effectively the same - comes from same refinery, in many cases delivered by same tanker (most tankers are independently owned even if they have livery)

The dirt is in poor maintenance of storage tanks, tanks that are near empty, places that have just got delivery (aggravates the sludge at bottom of tank) etc.

Build up in a car is over a period, so the garage that you just got a tankful will rarely be to blame - it just is the straw that breaks the fuel system in your car and possibly its the cleanest fuel you ahve got, but same as for teh garage's tank, your tank has an amount of sludge and this can get aggravated especially if you normally fill up before it gets 1/4 empty.

My own way of avoiding issues (I drive 60,000km a year min) is to run the tank to near empty before doing a 60-65 litre refill and at the service, ask the garage to check the fuel tank.

    1. If the price is too good to be true, it is.
    2. If the station is being filled, don't fill
    3. If they can't maintain their shop front, imagine what they're storage system is like.
