I think the engines in Navaras of that vintage tend to implode. A L200 or Hi-Lux would be much better.

ask the vendor for a trial, or at the very least take it on a very long extended test drive,

the L200 wouldn't be every body's choice (myself included)

will he using it for trailer work ?

You'd want to pull a bowser behind you - a pig on diesel

L200 engines not a great deal better either for them years. Over heating issues.

    Hilux.

I've never heard anything good about the engines in the Navara and I found the L200 very uncomfortable to drive over long distances so if he test driving one make sure it's not a quick spin. Can't beat a Hilux imo.

I've a Ranger, an 03. I always hear them getting slagged off, but I love mine and drive the rocks off it day in and day out - I find it good on diesel, easy to work on and very tough. I'd rather the Ranger to an L200 or a navarra, but the Hilux is the daddy. The Rangers easier on juice though..

I had 3 Navara back over the last 6 years.

1st one was a 2005 bought in the UK 75000miles never any bother and nice power.

2nd the same bought in the UK but sold it and 2 weeks later she blew the 3rd piston through the engine case(side Wall)

3rd was a 2005 and only 35000miles with a brand new engine only fitted as same problem with 3rd piston shooting out.
It was replaced under warranty by Nissan at no cost.

Even though they had this major fault I really wish I had kept the last one I loved them to drive compared to the L200 and Ford.

I would have loved a Hilux but they were and are crazy money.

If anyone is buying one try and find one that had the engine replaced and also serviced properly.

Isuzu D max could also be an option.

The issue with the navara seems to be with weak conrod bolt and lack of oil feeding through the oil pick up from the sump. There are modifications you can do like i have done recently with my old mans navara like uprated bolts, bigger oil pickup and modified sump.

Google 'navara engine fault' quite common issue. The newer models now seem to suffer with dodgy timing chains

Buy a spare engine and have it sitting in the back of that Navara.

You will need it sooner than you think..........:pac::pac::D
