Myself and my mates are hoping to go on a bit of a midweek golf trip and are trying to find any courses that might have deals on.

At the moment we will be playing Dun Laoghaire (where I am a member) and hopefully Blainroe and Rosslare (I think its called St Helens) We would have a budget of Max €20 per course so I was hoping people could recommend courses. We are all students. We have houses in Gorey, Rosslare and Brittas to stay so courses near there would be good. Hoping to get another 2 or 3 courses. Any recommendations?

With a budget of € 20 per course you may struggle a bit, perhaps they will have a student rate.

I would highly recommend Woodenbridge for the Wicklow part of your trip, amazing course, amazing scenery - Ireland's answer to Augusta.

    What makes it Ireland's Augusta?

The course is always in tip top condition - perfectly manicured, fast greens, wonderful flora and fauna, bordered by mature trees (particularly on the front 9), the quietness, the serenity of the location........ I could keep going (and no, I am not a member - I just have had the pleasure of playing on the course a number of times and have never been disappointed - even in inclement conditions).

Arklow has a 10-day open week at the start of August (a jpeg of their poster/ events is on my blog with green fees of 20 quid for members.

Also can recommend Macreddin. Probably 30 minutes tops from Brittas.

Should be other Open Weeks on around the place and even if not, most clubs have a weekly open competition of some description

Lots of good options in that area so well worth while checking out who is offering Open Weeks or open competitions.

Courtown (just outside Gorey) is very nice. You also have Seafield in that area but I don't rate it. A bit further inland Coollatin and Bunclody are both excellent. Arklow is a bit tight but fun (if you like links).

St Helens Bay and Rosslare are different clubs; Rosslare the better of them.

Macreddin is very hilly so unless you are happy to expend your energy climbing up and down you will need a buggy. Blainroe is OK but rock hard at the moment reportedly and a but of a seaside hack at this time of year. I would rate any of the above ahead of it.

Open week in Enniscorthy. Course playing well.

Bunclody is a good track but would be over your price, but they have an open singles every wednesday. Ballymoney is not great, real society track. Courtown is another option, greens are fast at the minute.

Not played wexford, new ross, arklow or seafield.i hear that wexford's greens are like glass. Seafield is not supposed to be great.

Rosslare is better than st helens.

There is a county wexford green fee pass that lets you play three courses. Ring the office in Enniscorthy and ask for John Cullen. He should have details. Great value.

The European wouldnt be too far either but around 60 quid.

Yes, Bunclody well worth it at open rates. Top class.

Having played Seafield, Courtown and Coolatin in recent weeks I would go with Courtown. It is in superb condition. Coolattin is a lovely track but is looking a little rough around the edges. Seafield is a course I don't really like, however since NAMA took over the condition of the course has really improved, greens are now receptive!!!!!

Unfair on Blainroe in my opinion, quite a nice course and played the 36 hole JSC there a couple of weeks ago on a scorcher of a day in the middle of the fine weather and course was nicely set up with greens pretty responsive and holding long approach shots with ease.
That said of the courses mentioned I've only played Bunclody so perhaps Blainroe is indeed bottom of that list as hard and all that is to believe.

Open singles in Wexford on 6th and 7th August €20.The course is in good shape and the greens are in superb condition. St Helen's is in better condition than Rosslare at the moment. Both courses are very brown but Rosslare greens are not good.Enniscorthy and New Ross are also good courses for around the €20 mark.

I am possibly being a bit unfair, although I still wouldn't rank it with most of the others mentions here. Someone who played there last week reported it hard and bumpy but most places were. I prefer it out of the holiday season when it feels a more serious course but I can think of many worse places.

List of courses that are worth your time.....

    Druids glen/Heath
    Macreddin
    Buncloudy
    European club
    Arklow GC

    Stay away from....
    Ballymoney ( boring)
    Seafield (boring)
    Woodenbridge ( over-rated)
    Coolatin ( not challenging)

    Just my views
