If you have a dated purchase receipt and meet a nice Garda it should be ok.

Firstly, take the antiquated expired tax disc out the window and bin - In the off chance that you do get stopped, tell them you just bought it .... be grand!!

I'd be more concerned about how bothered someone that didn't pay tax for 2 years would be about spending any money on the maintenance of the car.

    I wouldn't.

If I only had the money for one or the other, I know which one I'd do!

Think this is the case here too.

Thanks a mill for heads up.

This is not always the case, I know one person in particular who hasn't taxed his cars in about 3 or 4 years purely out of principal. He looks after them immaculately though they want for nothing and they are serious cars not runabouts we're talking about so maintenance isn't cheap.

My car would be seeing very little tax also only for its parked on the street so wardens can catch me and it is looked after extremely well.

The basis of all Irish law. Sure we're not sure, but be grand.:pac:
Meet the wrong Gard and he''ll do you.

Agree, Just sold a car with tax out of date 18 months, car was immaculately looked after. Always insured, serviced, repaired and always had up to date NCT.
No tax on a car do not signify the car was looked after, a keen eye does.

I thought when you bought a car you are not liable for tax from the previous owner??

Yeah thats true but you still shouldn't be driving an untaxed car on a public road.

In theory he should tow it back home and tax it from the date of purchase onwards before he can "legaly" drive it ... but to be fair... I doubt OP will even be pulled, and if he does, id sayd 99% of the Gards would be understanding and let him on his way as long as he's insured on it!

The suggestion of a written receipt wont make the slightest difference.... you may aswell get a photocopy of the back of the VLC or at least take a quick snap of it on your phone .. better than any "written receipt" from a private seller.

Youre not, but its still an offense to drive a vehicle that is not displaying a current tax disc. Its extremely unlikely that you will meet a Garda who will get snotty about if you can prove that you have just bought the car, but you never know.

The OP is concerned about being stopped while driving the car home before he gets a chance to tax it, not about how much he will have to pay.

But just to clear it up, you are not liable for back tax when you buy a car with an expired tax disc, you only pay the tax from the beginning of the month in which you become the owner.

Worst case scenario it is only €50 fine for no tax displayed.
    Drive away OP, drive away..:)
