Mechanics of a Driver

    Hi folks,

Im quite new to the game (but totally hooked) and have invested a bit in terms of clubs, bag, trolley etc...My query is in relation to a new driver as i have received a €200 voucher that a want to spend upgrading existing. The thing is i find it a bit intimidating (stupid i know a grown man and all) in the golf shop as my knowledge of the game and more particularly the mechanics of a driver are limited. If im paying approx €200 on a driver I think the lads in the shop could quite rightly assume that i know something and what im looking for.

I'm rambling a bit so basically my query is in relation to the mechanics of a driver and how it affects ball flight. At present i have a Ping G10 10.5 REgular flex but i feel the ball flight is too high and swings to the right maybe 40% of the time. Would a 9.5 address height issues and a stiffer flex help. I'm thinking of a Titleist 910 9.5 Stiff. Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

PS Do the likes of McGuirks have a testing room in store to try out a club. Ive no doubt i'd shank an attempt with a salesman there even though im ok on the course :o:o

It's almost all down to the shaft you use, not the driver head.
Not sure where you are, but McGuirks in Leopardstown have a simulator where you can try different shafts. You'll notice a big difference in the numbers spat out by the machine and the guys there will be able to explain what everything means, and advise you in the correct shaft.

If you are missing mainly to the right with the Reg flex shaft then you don't want a stiff flex shaft, perhaps a senior flex shaft would suit better.
Reducing the loft of driver won't necessarily reduce the the ball flight, that has more to do with the "kickpoint" on the shaft, generally speaking the lower the kickpoint the higher the trajectory.

If you are just starting then you shouldn't be reducing your loft. If you feel you are hitting it high then a shaft fitting would benefit you more.

Use the €200 for some lessons, it will be of far more benefit than a shaft fitting.

Many thanks for the replies, its much appreciated. Obviously my logic of reducing the loft will result in a lower ball flight is well wide of the mark. I've always been intrigued by the different set-up of a driver and how it would impact on my performance off the tee but obviously at my level paying for a fitting would be daft (open to correction). Its just when i have the voucher i said i would look at a driver. Could always spend it on clobber and balls (god knows i lose enough). Many thanks again for the replies so far
