Bit of advice needed, the folks have a 02 a4 convertible with a 2.7 petrol engine which needs an engine replacement according to the mechanic but he can't find an engine to go in.

Could anyone advise what other engines would go into this and recommend someone to fit it.
And an idea of cost or scrap value as I think they might just want rid attachments this stage

    Have you tried the uk?

Does it need an entire engine?

What exactly is wrong with the current engine?

Alternatively a VAG 1.8T engine should fit in but it's going to be a big expensive job.

Break it for parts and buy something else? A 11 year old A4 2.7 ain't worth much in Ireland anyway...

Well they never came with a 2.7 engine to begin with so no wonder he can't find one! :P

Would it be the 2.4 V6 petrol engine by any chance?

I'm pretty certain the A4 never came with a 2.7 petrol engine, certainly not in 2002 model range.

    The 2002 A4 (i.e. B6) Cab came in 1.8T, 2.4 and 3.0 petrol (maybe also 2.0?)

    and 2.5TDI

Didn't come with the 2.7T petrol no?

2.7 was only available as a TDI as far as I know and only became available from B7 ownwards

I think OP they maybe better off getting the existing engine rebuilt.

There was a 2.7T petrol V6 available in certain models around that time. It's probably the same or similar to the 2.7T available in the Allroad so that might be an avenue to explore. They're not going to be common though.

OP, if you can post up the engine code, it might be easier to help.

Isnt the 2.7T a twin turbo, as in the one used in the B5 S4... being replaced by the 4.2 V8 in the B6 model?

I doubt thats the one in the OP's parents A4 B6 Cabrio

That was one version but there are lower-powered versions too. Like I said, a 2.7T was one of the engine options in the first Allroad.

thanks for all the replies and sorry for missing/incorrect info.
this is the correct engine type http://www.autoevolution.com/engine/audi-a4-2001-24-v6.html (2.4 v6, not 2.7)

    options so far:
rebuild engine - could anyone recommend a decent specialist please, ive asked my dad to let me know exactly what the current mechanic said
replace engine - any suggestions of price of engine, different engine that would fit this car with least fuss
break the bloody thing - whats it worth and any suggestions of a breaker who would give a good price

Mechanic says there is a crack/hole in one cylinder causing loss of compression and doesn't think it could be recondtiomed

Did you try Traynor's up North. I think they or the UK are your best bet to finding a reconditioned one.

Haven't tried anyone yet. Expecting the 2.4 to be an expensive / rare and item so sizing up options, especially if a smaller a4 engine will go in with minimal hassle

Youre best off replacing like for like. A different engine would be to much of a headache and with replacing like for like youll also be left with a lot of good spare parts if something on the newer engine were to go!

Also, those 2.4 engines arent as "rare" as you seem to think they are :)

Cool, any idea of the going rate for one?

Head over to the VWVortex forum and you'll get a better answer, there always posting up engine conversions etc.. I'm sure you could fit any engine from VAG in there within a budget, even a 1.9TDi, that would be some mile muncher.
