Lights

Got caught out last night with the dark clouds/shorter days. Looks like lights will be needed again and I'm looking around for options.

When I need lights I'll be in and around well lit areas (mainly Dublin 18/4/14 areas) so I was wondering what level of lumens I should be aiming for?

I've heard good things about the Lezyne Macro drive. 300l front 70l rear. Any use?

This is the most depressing thread I've seen for a while :(

Tell me about it. 1.5 hrs into a 2.5 hrs spin and I had to head home

Go out earlier and don't mention lights or shorter days till at least October.

Only time I can cycle during the week is 5:30 am or 8pm.

It really depends if you want lights to be seen or to see with/light up the road. If the latter, this is the definitive thread on the matter. If the former then tbh any of the standard brands should suffice. One I would suggest you look at though is the Exposure Flash and Flare - I use them as secondary lights or when I just want something to light me up in low light conditions. I've never had problems with the Exposure brand - they tend to be very sturdy and reliable

Have a look on ebay or amazon for "CREE" head light , 1200 or 1800 lumen . Can be mounted on head or handle bars. Battery lasts 3+ hours on low beam which is nearly as strong as a car,s headlights .

Its more to be seen. As I said 99% of the roads I will be cycling on have street lighting

For this time of year, just get low powered (AA or AAA powered) clip on flashy lights, front and rear.

agree with this as a great light, i picked up one of these:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007715E4C/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

however, i use it for mountain biking in the winter in forests. it's likely huge overkill for city riding

i also have a lezyne superdrive xl, great light, very bright, and focused, i imagine one of it's smaller brethern would be well suited to city riding

Lezyne Macro drive seems to be a good option

if its just to be seen, i find that a head lamp in addition to standard bike lights is effective. mostly useful when cars approach from slip roads, you can direct the light at them......and hopefully they will notice you rather than a standard light blending into the background

Try to fix a light to the back of your helmet as well if you are wearing one - in addition to having a light fixed to the bike. A couple of cable ties can usually be used to clip it on to. The fact that it's a bit higher up than a frame mounted light seems make it stand out a bit more. A relatively inexpensive light is probably best - as it will inevitably get knocked around a bit more than a frame mounted light.

why dont you buy a new front dynamo wheel from bike discount cheaper and better than any lights.of course you need a new BnM headlight as well but you can stay out all night if you so wish:D:D
thats what i'll be up to tonight a night spin is well overdue.;)
