Squat

Whats the best way to start a squat i.e. just to get into position to start squatting?

    I have this bench: http://www.irishsportswarehouse.ie/catalog/weight-benches

I place the barbell on the bench and sit at the top end of the bench at the very edge, and lift barbell off bench while standing up.. But this is very awkward... and nervous about injuring myself..

    Any other ways?

    A squat rack is ideal.

Failing that, you could decide to clean the weight off the ground into the high rack position, set yourself (high elbows, not holding the weight with your hands so fingertips only, feet in correct position) and front squat?

    Thanks, actually good idea.

Do the same as before, with the barbell on the bench and do front squat from there?

    Will give that a go...

Well no, no need to use the bench. Place the bar on the ground and do a clean variation to get it sitting in the front rack.

You can deadlift it to a hang position and hang clean it to get you started.

Trying to position the bar onto your shoulders (front or back) while sitting down isn't very efficient and might lead to a problem.

with various levels of risk and/or desperation:

Buy some squat stands, they can be quite cheap. (or improvise with them by making your own, risky!)
Place the bar verticle, squat down and lower the bar onto your back (probably riskywith heavy weight)
By some axel stands, steps, bricks and start in the low position.
Get a trainig partner to help you load up on your back.
    Clean it, like lloyd says.
But long tern I would get a gym membership or buy a squat rack/stands

Plastering stands are a v cheap option. Or zercher squats that don't need any equipment
