My garage i used to use closed in galway last year hiway in tuam I have a focus and i had a timing belt done by another garage in the locality and the engine management light came on a few weeks after he had it done so i took it back in to him and he turned it off but it came on again after a few months and than he said the cat was gone in it, i am just wondering are they linked if the timing belt was not fitted properly would it burn out the cat or is it just coincidence. well i took it in to ford for a second opinion and they said that it needed a new cat and gave me a price of 850 euro but they said to chance the nct that it might pass ,i tested it yesterday and it failed in the high idle, i rang an exhaust lad in the city and he can fit a cat for 150 but cant test it or should i bite the bullet and get it done by the main dealer. any advise is greatly appreciated.

What year and model is the Focus and what engine is in it?

It more than likely is the cat. As you have found out the cat on that model Focus is extremely expensive. The €150 cat is going to be a weld in universal cat which won't last at all so don't bother with that option.

If you go for a Bosal direct fit cat and get an independent garage to fit it then you will probably save €200-250 off the Ford price of €850.

The one linked is for a mk1.5 (to year 11/04). Some parts guys don't recognise the facelift mk1.5 and call it the mk2. I would double check it with them to confirm. It's possible it could be a very early mk2.

Chances are its over fueling, catalytics don't just decide to die, that cheap option will need replacing next year when its burnt out again.

Got a diagnostic done from ford main dealer they told me cat was gone and that they don't last for ever, there was a 08 getting a cat fitted that day under warranty it seems to be common enough in these focus , sorted now , for 2 years anyway.
