Hi folks, got a job way closer to home so mileage is down to about 12,500 per year from 25,000. With my passat starting to cause me some trouble I've decided to get something else. Just wondering what peoples opinions are of this GTI? http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Golf/GOLF-2.0/201329216019785/advert?channel=CARS
Will probably keep my next car for 2 years so mileage will end up at 120,000 when I go to sell it on. Will it be hard to sell at that mileage? Should I look for a lower mileage older one? This is the top end of my budget!!
    Thanks, Mark.

Belts should be done and DSG box should have had the oil changed probably twice by now. Look to validate this is the service history also. There's virtually no tax difference between 2008-2007, so maybe you might get a better 2007 one? I wouldn't limit yourself to 2008 anyhow.

Personally I think the miles are a little high on that car for the year. Red isn't a great colour on GTIs it will affect the resale price.

Make sure the DSG has been serviced. CV joints and suspension issues can be an issue especially with those 18 inch Monzas. The Monzas are also prone to white worm and give a very grad ride. If I was buying another gti I would probably get the 17s.

The mileage is high for my liking but that's just my opinion. The one thing i would check is that the air condition works. I know the compressors went in a lot of them in the earlier years.

Can you back this up with some evidence?

Mileage isn't important as long as it's been serviced on time every time and had fully synthetic oil. However people are generally obsessed with mileage so you could use this to negotiate a good price, subject to my earlier point.

Check the dsg goes into 1st and reverse without clunking and as stated check it's been serviced properly.

That one looks like a very clean example. It doesn't have climate control though, but a lot of Irish cars are like this.

I think it looks pretty good in red personally.

While it is in no way evidence, and 100% personal taste... The first thing I said to myself when I opened the ad was its red so I wouldnt even consider it :p

No off course I don't have any evidence. Just a friend in the trade told me that RED GTIs are difficult to shift. Personally i am not a fan of red GTIs but I suppose they are in keeping with GTI heritage.

Red is my least favorite colour in any car.

A black gti unless owner has ocd is very ordinary looking especially with a few dings.

Have you driven a gti before op ?

Make sure and try out similar cars on a test drive for perspective and to weed out any issues car to car etc

Thanks for all the advice folks.. have driven a few of them, slightly worried about having the dsg out of warranty with relatively high mileage.. Might try to hold out for a manual in grey which would be my preferred colour although i think they all look good!! Prices seem to be all over the place on donedeal and carzone though!

Hey guys, have looked at a couple of gtis but still no closer to finding the one. After seeing a clean red one which a friend owns I really liked it. Any ideas how you'd go about removing the tints off this one and if the wheels could be restored to their original state? Or would it be too much work? It fits my bill being a 3 door, leather and having sunroof which I've decided I want! Plan to view it early next week. http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/gti-golf/5447908 Thanks.

Are they the 18" wheels? I can't tell from the shambolic paint job on them. If they are, there's only a couple of places that can restore them properly, and they're all in the UK.

I don't know what the hell the guy was thinking to be honest!! If the car checks out otherwise I might just go for it and try to find a set of original 17s somewhere.. Getting the tints off is another job but should be ok to do! Main problem trying to find one of these seems to be a lot of them are poorly maintained and some of the asking prices are also ridiculous!

Id look for a manual one tbh. The dsg is a liability out of warranty.

Ahh what did he do to those wheels :(

Black powdercoat looks great on a red gti but that is awful :(

Sweet jesus H, what is the name of god did he do to those wheels? Most definitely, the worst alloys I've ever set my eyes on.

    And the windows?

Should start a thread in how to 'mess up a great car'.

Makes me wonder what the mentality is! The price is what attracted me to be honest!!

Actually looking at a mark 6 Gti - what real world mpg could I expect - dsg.
    Is 22k too expensive for a 2010?

Depends on your typical journeys. If you do a lot of short city trips, stop start, you'll be doing well to get 25-28mpg. Longer trips with sensible right foot, you'll see 34-36mpg.
