    Hi

Just looking for a bit of advice, i am the senior member of a finance team and have previously told my boss i am looking for progression within the group in the next few months (which is encouraged!)

I have just found out that the junior in my team ( who i have been training) has been promoted to a newly created role in a different team.

This role was not advertised internally or externally, the junior is living with one of the managers who is buddies with the head of the team with the new position and i am only one of 3 females in the department of 25.

The junior and the team he has moved to is 100% male they all socialise togethar etc. I am more qualified and have over 5 years more experience

Do i have any leg to stand on as i am pretty annoyed with the whole situation.
    Any advice much appreciated

Not really no. They don't have to advertise jobs and short of being able to claim that you were not promoted due to your gender (and if you go down that route it will risk backfire on you as a trouble maker) you'll have no real grounds to stand on.

    Its a tough one..
My experience is that many jobs are earmarked for candidates before they become available, advertising and interviews can be a mere formality. from that perspective I'd say let it go, ensure they know your keen to move on and see how it goes..

However, you may have a genuine case for descrimination to persue and it would be wriong to discourage that. Here isnt the place to decide that and you'll need very sound professional advice before going ahead with that route..

Lastly you could ask for a "quick chat" with you manager. Look for feedback on areas to improve that would make you their first choice for the next position.. this way your not going to get their backs up complaining about not getting the role, show that your interested in progression, and that your willing to put in the work to make it happen..

I would say have a look at your company handbook and look for the section called company policies and procedures. It will give you some clarity on what the company's policy is towards internal promotion. If you haven't even been given the opportunity to go for an interview for this position i would have a friendly word with your manager. If this gets you no where , bring it to the attention of your hr department. If your still not getting anywhere get some legal advice and have all your information and your work reviews ready for your solicitor .Document everything and be careful. It wont be easy
