    Hi
Would a BMX helmet be any better / worse than a "normal" road bike helmet?
I always thought they looked like they provide more protection.

    Sorry for the newbie question!

    Thanks
    M

I don't know protection differences, but I've heard they're hotter and heavier than road helmets.

Comfort aside, visibility is restricted so you're more likely to have an accident.

edit: wait, do you mean "piss pot" or "full face"?

I bought the Giro Feature as I wanted more all over protection and preferred the look of the 'mushroom' helmets. Its not any heavier but does get hotter due to less vents.

Helmets for different activities often have a different design to address what are considered the most likely typres of impact that might occur during that activity. So I believe that the design of skateboarding helmets emphasises protection for the back on the head, for example, whereas many of the road helmets I've used don't seem to focus much attention/material back there. I've no idea where BMX helmets fall (ha!) though.

Here is one random source of info on BMX helmet design though I'm not sure that it sheds much light.
