What would be the best bike with a budget of 1300, just got into cycling but current bike will need an upgrade when I take it more seriously and I'm just looking at what the best bike would be for 1300? All suggestions aprreciated.

Get a giant defy 1 with 105 group or a specialized allez comp also with 105
Keep away from carbon frames at this price a good alu frame is way better than a cheap carbon frame.

I have to agree with Disco1. Got a Giant Defy 1 recently for €1150. It needed a few tune ups after a few weeks but cant fault it. It took a good hit in the recent Sligo to Letterkenny cycle, when I hit the bike that went down in front of me. The only damage was a torn front tyre. Apart from the damage to myself of course!

I have a 2011 Giant defy3 which has a better frame than the current Giant Defy Ally series (all the ally defys have the same frame just different group) and I have a Cube Agree GTC which I got on sale online from Germany for 1300 quid. There is absolutely no comparison. The Cube frame is streets ahead of the Giant. Don't get me wrong the Giant is a fine solid frame which has taken a shot of abuse but if it's responsiveness and ride quality you want, it's the Cube all the way.

I reckon if you shop around you could pick yourself up a mighty fine Carbon bike for 1300 quid

You can get a Canyon with full 105 and Ksyrium wheels for €1299.

I'd consider this: Wiggle's Verenti Insight 105 which is on sale at the moment for €1,236.68.

The Ultegra version of this exact bike won the Cycling Plus "Best Value" bike in their recent 2013 Bike of the Year test and was awarded 4.5 stars. The Verenti range is new for 2013 and are based on Ridley framesets.

The Cycling Plus review is here: link and this is what they said: "Accomplished ride, excellent kit and understated finish – very classy"

Thanks guys and keep the suggestions coming, I'm very new to all this and have started off on a basic Carrera TDF from Halfords but will definately be uprgrading as I want to enter charity cycles and want a decent bike, so will be saving up for something around the price range mentioned.

One thing you may want to also consider is what you want out of the bike - an out and out racer or something more comfort orientated.

I'd say all of the bikes mentioned above are top class, but some are better at certain things than others, i.e. You don't want to end up with a crew cab pickup if what you originally wanted was a Golf GTI. And visa versa ...

    Thanks Route66

I suppose I would be looking for a good blend between an out and out race and comfort if such a bike exists, I want a bike that is light enough for the money I'm paying and has the speed.

I'm on the lookout for one of these myself. Not impressed with the paint job on this years models though (it's gotta look good). If anyone has a 2012 in a 51 laying up doing nothing i'm in the market :). Failing that I will have to wait to see what they do with 2014 models.

Charge more for them most likely.

    Hi

Have a look at the Felt F75 good bang for your buck, 105, BB30, Alu frame. Got mine at the start of last year and have been happy so far.

Just got a Cube Agree Pro 2013 from my lbs for £1150.

Not sure what the exchange rate is but can't be far away.

I just bought a trek 2.1 for a little over 1200 last week from my lbs and I'm very happy with it. Tiagra cassette and 105 everything else, carbon fork and Alu frame. Really nice bike.

I am in the same boat also have had my Saracen Pro tour alloy frame carbon fork Sora Groupset for the past six years and only recently has it been getting good mileage.

I am now in a position to do bike2 work so have narrowed down my choices to Giant Defy 1 €1250 Lbs (105 Groupset), Focus Cayo 2.0 €1499 Full Carbon Eurocycles (Ultegra Grey Groupset) Merida Ride Lite 904 €1215 Lbs (105 Groupset) any thoughts on these bearing in mind I weigh 100kg and it has been suggested to go for a good alloy frame rather than a low entry carbon

You should get the 2014 Defy 1 for €1125, I did last week. If you can get your employer to deal direct with the bike shop, not any of those voucher scams, you will get 10% off list price, otherwise voucher intermediary will pocket your discount. I've been told this in 2 LBS.

Just bought a Stevens San Remo from fitzcyles in Stillorgan village for 1000 euro and I'm loving it. Plus the lads in the shop are fantastic to deal with.

Bearing in mind anything in the op's price range is going to come with fairly heavy and low level wheels

I am also looking to buy a bike in this price range and I want to make the most out of the bike to work scheme. I noticed a few on here are mentioning the Giant bike - where can I get this? I've tried cycle superstore and Halfords but no luck.

What about the Rose brand, are they of any use? There are a good few for sale on this site: http://www.rosebikes.com/bike/rose-pro-sl-2200-rs/aid:604754

Hi Hadoken13 I'm sure there are plenty of places around but Victoria cross cycles in Cork have the Giant Defy 1 for €1249 with free nation wide delivery although I know Euro Cyles give you €150 worth of accessories when you spend over €1000 so something to consider

Thanks New2bike, I might take a look at the weekend.
