Best is a subjective word. What size do you want it to be? What features matter most/least to you? A €250 is cheaper than a €500 because it will be worse in some features, which features are you OK with it being worse in?

the neus 7 is the best 7inch tablet atm. as another poster said, there is a new version coming out soon, early august afaik. only problem is, if google handle the launch in their usual half assed way, you could be waiting a lot longer to get your hands on it.

This is also a subjective statement. The Nexus 7 is a great tablet but it is certainly not the best 7 inch tablet on the market right now. If it was why bother updating it? It is quite old as far as tech is concerned and has been described as being laggy and buggy on Android 4.2. Even the new Nexus 7 might not be the best 7 inch tablet, but it will be good value for money and the first tablet to have 4.3, but hardware wise there will probably be better.

Yes of course its subjective, but i have had a few tablets and i have the nexus 7 since last year and never had a problem with bugs or lag.a lot of my friends have it as well and never had problems.i know there have been some minor bugs with chrome but thats a different story, lots of other browsers to choose.i use mine for games, books, movies etc and always found it too class in performance. Afaik they are moving away from tegra 3 in the new n7,think they are using snap dragon, whether thats good or bad remains to be seen.the op should wait until the launch of the new one imo because he can choose between the new one or the old one which will drop in price.i couldnt reccommend the nexus 7 highly enough from my experience.edit; the reason they are updating it is because it has always been the google way with nexus, they usually bring a new nexus out every year.

Thank you all for great feedback. So nexus it is then :)
If I decide to go for Nexus 10, should I go for something different in that price range?
It's for my wife as a presie.

Nexus 10 is hard to beat for the price really, your wife will love it!

You can get a refurbished 32GB one here for £310 + €3.50, but if it's a present I assume you'll want to go down this route.

I bought the Nook HD+(9 inch screen) for £139 thru Flubit, case and a stylus came in at £20. It's a very good piece of kit for the price, not as good as the Nexus in terms of spec, but for what I use it for(Browsing,Books,Movies), it really is worth the difference of buying the Nexus.
To put it into perspective, I sold my Nexus 7 and still had money left over. Just a thought

Nexus 7 is great in a lot of ways, but YouTube vids are often really slow due to a bug which is mad since its a Google product. But generally great value and 7 in is much easier to hold, don't like the larger tabs unless you watch a lot of films on it. the rotating hip street case or similar goes great with it and doubles as a stand, definitely recommend them as well.

Devices are not available to buy from the playstore in ireland neither are movies.they are available in several european countries such as the uk,france, germany, etc but not in ireland yet, which is pathetic considering googles eurooean hq is in ireland! We only got books hereba couple of months ago! The movies issue is to do with copyrights, which i believe to be b.s. because apple i tunes have movies in this country.why they dont sell devices here i,m not sure.

The new Nexus 7 was announced today so don't rush out and buy the old one just yet.

Also, that bug with youtube videos on the original Nexus can be fixed by running the forevergone app suggested by Gran Hermano here:

You might find great value in a decent second hand Nexus 7 on adverts.ie. Even one with 3G, so you can access the internet when no wifi is available.

The nexus 7 will shoot down in price when the new one is launched I reckon. A real bargain could be had if anyone is prepared to wait a few weeks.
