I'm trying to root my phone but it doesnt seem to mount the sd card in recovery to enable me to run the update zip.

Has anyone else encountered this problem or have any idea as to how to go about solving it ?

In case anyone is interested I got this fixed by formatting the sd card on the phone. I still couldnt root it so I flashed it with a stock rom using Odin. Then ran the same update zip from recovery mode as I tried before and I now have the phone rooted.

Next mission is to try upgrade it to JellyBean.
