Hi al, i'm sitting my first driving test in 2 weeks! i was supposed to do it last year but backed out as i felt i was not ready. I'v been driving well over a year now, i use the car when the hubby does not need it which is usually 4-5 times a week.
I feel confiedent enough driving around though i'm a bit nervouse sitting my test:eek:
I'm doing my tst in Finglas on a Saturday morning @ 8.30am!! I'm hoping the roads should b quet enough this time of morning:confused::confused:
I'v been reading rules of the road, signs, hand signals and questions and answers. do i have to learn drivers and garda hand signals?
I'm going for 5 pre-tests the week before, one test each day.
Any more tips to help me please:)
I relly want to pass 1st time as i want to get my own car and not need a qualified driver al the time! P.S... will i need to bring a qualified driver on the day with me?? i have 2 youngs kids and did not want to have to wake them up also:(
    Thanks:D

    Hi martina,
Good Luck for your test.Familiarize with the routes around the test center so that it eases your tension and you feel as if you are driving with one of your friend ;) and not the tester.:D
Road signals and hand signals are important but and also read about drivers and garda signals though the latter are not much important in driving test point of view.
I took 3 pre tests in three weeks time.I kept driving and concentrated more on the weak points mentioned by my instructor. I kept practising the manoeuvres when ever i had time.
Yes you have to bring a full licence holder during your test if not your hubby a friend or colleague who hold full licence.
I had my test on July 18th by 2.55 afternoon in Limerick.I was very nervous as it was the first time ,but somehow my husband consoled that it's okay if I fail and I was bit cool then when tester started asking questions about the road signals i went deaf and dumb but the tester found that I was nervous as any one would..!! but some how i managed to answer all the questions.
I had drive around 30 min ( from 2.55-3.25) I was very much used the test routes as kept driving in and around the route as my daughter's crèche is around the area. I was not very quick in doing the reverse corner and i saw him mark in the ipad and i guessed that was a red mark...! So I was very cool as i knew I'm going to fail the test (and thought another 85 euros )
He did not ask me about the hill start (as there were many hill starts in signals and stop and yield signs and made use of hand brakes and observations) and he asked me to drive to center and I confirmed and made up my mind to book a test immediately.
When i parked the car i did it perfectly but the engine was cut off and i was like no way i will pass:o..!! When I was called in to tell the results he said "you have passed the test" and again I went deaf and dumb..!!
He explained me that I had 2 green marks and 6 blue marks in which 2 was for reverse round the corner. I was delighted..!! Yay..!! I was telling to myself that I passed my driving test in one go...!!! Woooow..!!!Applied for the full licence this Monday...!!
So Good luck once again keep practising and stay cool and drive as if you are driving with your friend..!! And you will succeed..!!

Best of luck with the test. No matter what happens during the test, try to relax because one mistake doesnt mean you will fail the test!

Hi Martina, I'm on the 16th of August, 2 weeks tomorrow and I'm petrified. I'm still brutal at hill starts - well not even the manoevure as such but anytime I have to start at a small incline at a traffic light or where there is a stop sign on a hill. I just cut out every time. I don't know what's wrong with me. I can do the hill start on it's own 99% of the time with no problems but as soon as I head into traffic and have to set off when I light goes green and I have to release the handbrake, I cut out. I panic majorly as soon as I see someone coming up behind me and several times the car behind has been stuck a second time as I haven't made it hrough the green light and it has turned red again.

It's too late to cancel mine so I'm going to have to go for it. I have 5 pre-test lessons booked like yourself, 1 each day and including the day of the test itself, I'm hoping it will be enough. I'm only driving 6 weeks.

Doing it in Sligo. Monday's a Bank Holiday though so I don't think that counts as a working day in the count of 10 days. There is so much to remember!

What would be considered a RED mark? I know not stopping at a stop sign or not stopping at a pedestrian crossing where pedestrians are waiting or going through a red light or mounting a kerb are all reds but I'm not sure what else.

If I cut-out/conk is that a red? or a failed attempt at a hill-start where I have to do it a second time or what about if I scratch the kerb turning a corner by accident etc.

I'm just finishing my EDT today and plan on booking it on my next pay day. I'm really nervous about it, especially since I have a job dependent on having a car lined up for September. I am DREADFUL at the manoeuvres, which I could potentially fail on. I'm a very good driver apart from that but I just can't seem to do it right and if I do, I end up neglecting to use my mirrors as much. Does anyone hate doing them as much as me? Oddly, I love hillstarts, find them one of the easier parts.

I'm the complete opposite, give me a turnabout or reversing around a corner any-day over a starting at a red traffic light on an incline with cars behind me (HELL FOR ME).

I prefer the manoeuvres because they are usually away from main traffic routes, you have plenty of time to do the reverse around a corner (apparently they like to see you doing it slowly, there is no time limit on it) and the turnabout doesn't have to be completed in 3 moves anymore which is great, that totally takes the pressure off so no excuse to be hitting the kerb. When I did a few lessons over 4 years ago it was still a 3-point turn and I found it impossible. Where will you be doing the test? What are the waiting times like?

I have a hill start at traffic lights on the way into my local town, so I've had to do it since the beginning of my driving career, that's probably why I am less nervous about it.
I've never gone up on the kerb, I actually end up too far out from it and have to realign myself all the time.. I just get extremely nervous but it's probably because I'm rushing it a bit. I'll have to slow down and take my time today and see if I manage It better. I'll update later if I managed it better today, I'm doing it on the test route today so it might be a bit easier- the reversing around a corner where I usually do it is on a slight hill, so it is a little trickier.

I'm in the Dundalk test centre, the waiting time is 8 weeks but there is a high cancellation rate. (Hoping to get one of those.) I can get a lift to work for the first few weeks but I'd really need a licence by mid October by the latest, so failing isn't really an option for me at this stage. Fingers crossed for everyone on this thread, I think it's one of the most nerve-wrecking tests I've ever prepared sit.

I'm sure once u start ur pre test lessons you'll feel more comfy and you'll defo b more prepared for ur test... Just keep reading ur rules of road book and those questions!
I'm dreaming of the bloody signs:-/
I find the roadwork signs more difficult to remember than the other signs they are so tricky to place..
Anyways my 1st pre test today with a really good instructer that was reccommended to me through boards..
So i'll know what i need to work on by tonite anyways:)
I hav been driving over a year now just need to brush up on things before test as i defo dont want to fail....
Best of luck on ur test..
    Keep me posted:)

Any tips on starting at a red - green traffic light on an incline. I know it should be the same method as a hill start - but I just can't go, I don't know what it is. Always, always have to conk first like. In fairness about 75% of drivers behind are fine but yesterday was my worst. I conked twice at the green light and the light turned red again so everyone behind me was stuck for a second wait. I actually started crying out of panic and frustration especially when I saw the driver behind me throwing his head in his hands and then leaning way back in his seat. It's just such a horrible feeling and it's getting worse now because it is happening me so often. Nearly everything else is fine but this is a major problem because I find myself avoiding certain streets but I won't have any choice on the day of the test.

You're probably rushing because the light has gone green and you're letting the clutch up too quickly. Find the tug point of the clutch and apply a bit of acceleration and hold the clutch for a couple of seconds after letting down the handbrake. Don't worry about not being like a greyhound out of the trap. If you take your time, you'll be off a lot quicker than you would rushing it and conking twice.

Are you usually good at the hill start? If not, then it might just be a case of needing more practice on doing it somewhere quiet without the pressure of traffic.

If you're usually good, it's probably just nerves, so take your time and don't let the clutch out too quickly. Go into gear as soon as the lights change and keep the clutch down 'ready to go' (then you don't have to worry about changing gears quickly while trying to accelerate and letting the handbrake down.) Make sure you're putting down the accelerator enough (revving the tiniest bit too much will make it easier) while letting the clutch out slowly and gradually let down the handbrake as you feel the car ready to move forward.

If you feel that it's the traffic around you that is intimidating, let the cars in front move off a little and then you only have to focus on the cars and hazards behind you. Don't feel that you have to rush because of them, they should understand the wait when they see your L plates.

I hope my description isn't that confusing, I haven't ever thought about how I do it, it's natural at this stage for me.

I had a perfect turnabout and an almost perfect reverse around the corner today, I was slightly unaligned with the kerb. Definitely helps to take my time and think about each step clearly. I'm doing an extra lesson next week just to brush up on a few bad habits but I'm a lot more optimistic about passing. Thanks to all for the advice & good luck to all.

I had my first pre test lesson today...
    Everything went really well:)
The instructer asked me to do a reverse round the bend and i did pretty well on my first attempt.. Although i was a little close to the kerb..
He also got me to do a turnabout.. My first attempt was done in 4 points.. He showed me how to do it in 3 points which was soooo easy:)
I'm very pleased with myself today...
The instructer said he was very pleased with my first lesson

Thanks for this detailed answer. I am usually good at them out of traffic situations so yes it probably is nerves and panic when I see cars behind me. You said to 'go into gear' as soon as the lights turn. I don't do this. When I'm stopped I have the car in 1st, handbrake on and clutch fully depressed (is this wrong in your opinion) should I be in neutral until the lights change?

I also noticed you said to gradually let down the handbrake, I don't do this either, I tend to find the bit and then release the handbrake straight down in one swift movement, could this also be a problem?

Hi.. No it did not come up on ISM videos.. Although u can type it in and see what comes up?
My car is an automatic so i'm not too worried about hill start...
Yes i'v done 2 lessons so far and really have learned alot:) he also learned me a much easier way to parrellel park as i have huge difficulity in doing this!
Also he learned me the best way to reverse round the bend... So i'm hoping that i pass on saturday!! Its really flying in now:-/
Try to search hill start driving lessons on youtube.. U may come across more English type videos as i have'nt come across many Irish driving bideo's apart from ISM...
Or try ADI driving school website.. He has a few video's up also..
    Best of luck:)

No, it's not wrong if the lights are due to change very soon but if there Is going to be a delay, you should stop fully, put on the hand brake and engage neutral- I'm nearly sure it's expected in the test to stop fully like this at a red light.

The handbrake could be making things worse, on an incline, you have to accelerate a little more while letting the clutch go to find the bit so there's a high chance you're not accelerating enough as you let the clutch out. If you let the handbrake down gradually at the same time, it's easier to control the car from rolling back. Plus, if you conk out on a hill with the handbrake already turned off, you'll roll backward, depending on how close the car behind you is, you may not have time to hit the brake or handbrake again.

Again, I'm dreadful at explaining what I mean but I hope you get the jist of it.

I'm really nervouse now that the test is getting close!
I was thinking of using Kalms or Rescue Remedy to help relax my nerves a little?
    Anyone used these before?
Any feed back would b appreciated..

Hopefully if you do a pre-test on the day of the test, you make make less mistakes because your instructor will tell you what mistakes you have made. They will then be fresh in your mind. Personally, I think everybody is nervous on their test day, and if they say otherwise, then they are liars!:P

Did another pre test today.. this was my 2nd one and i passed with only 4 grade 2!
I'm pleased enough that i got a pass even tho its a mock...
I have 3 more pre test lessons, 2 will b mocks and 1 on the day of test just to refresh my memory...
I really need a pass as I'm starting work in September and i will need my own car...

PS...decided to take some Rescue Remedy to see if it would work and I can honestly say that i was much more relaxed and less tense than I am normally... I know some people say its all in the mind...thinking positive and al that stuff but I felt it worked wonders for me:-))
    Saturday is sooo frickin close!!!!

At least at that time of the morning on a Saturday, the road will be quiet so that should calm your nerves!

Anyone able to give any advice on how to 'scan' a roundabout properly. My instructor keeps giving out that I'm not scanning the roundabout sufficiently but I don't know what I'm not doing. I approach the roundabout and I look in all directions and if there is nothing coming I go and if I in any way dilly-dally as he says he's giving out again. I'm finding it hard to scan sufficiently without dailly-dallying!

My instructer tells me to scan roundabout before entering.. So that if ur wat is clear u don't hav to stop just keep going if ur way is clear:)
    Hope this helps:)

That does help thanks. Another thing is pedestrian crossings - there are tons of them in Sligo and I know you fail if you don't stop and let someone cross but twice now I have been out and not know whether someone is stopped or not - like (hard to explain) but your driving and approach and they're walking on approach and they kind of hover a short distance from the actually crossing itself - these situations are tricky. I stopped at it yesterday and my instructor was like 'why are you stopping' I said 'there's a pedestrian' and he goes 'sure he's miles away'. He wasn't, he was approx a saloon car length from the crossing itself.

Well if someone was on the crossing and ur so close like a saloon car lenght i would stop...
Just go with ur instinct.... In that situation i think u did right:)
My instructer says u hav to stop if u see a pedistrian on the crossing

Its a grade 2 for not making progress or grade 3 for failure to react to hazards. You can get 9 grade 2's and 0 grade 3. On my test I sacrificed a grade 2 to avoid a potential grade 3. When you go make sure you dont open your risk to a grade 3 too much. And hopefully nothing like that will happen on the day :)
