Breakfast Shake -- good or bad ?

    Hi All.

    I want to change what I have for breakfast as it's not doing any good.

    I use to eat corn flakes until i read someone on here about how bad they are..

    So I then tried eggs which made me heave and want to get sick.. !!

    So I then went to Porridge didn't like it at all.. was just like warm goo.. I couldn't stomach it.

    So now i have 2 slices of brown bread toast.

    But I wanted to know would breakfast shakes be better ? ... If yes what are the best and what would i need to make them ?

    Here's a good one.

    ½ celery stick

    mix the porridge with milk and add something you like to it, like raisins etc. Its nice enough like that and its the best way to start the day!

    don't like eggs, don't like porridge. well what do you like?

    Steak? bacon? sausages? Chicken? yoghurt? nuts? Stew? Stir fry?
    just pick something you do like.
    breakfast doesn't have to be "breakfast food"
    eat left overs from last nights meal if you wish.
    Alternatively skip breakfast until later in the day when your stomach is more ready for food.

    Eating healthy isn't about forcing unpalatable food down your throat just cos someone else says you should.

    Very true... but I am trying new things.. I now eat the odd bit of veg.. ( I have pics lol )

    I'm in the habit of now trying anything once.. I'll give it a go.

    I've lost 25lbs since the gym opened next door... Just need to sort out a few of my foods and i'll be grand. ( No sweets anyone more :( )

    Are Sausages not really bad for you ? ..

    I wouldn't be able to skip breakfast.. I did it a few times and got really dizzy in the gym. So i need something inside of me.

    Never post here but I had a similar problem with porridge so what I do now is eat the oats with cold milk and coffee. I like the taste better and as I used to eat muesli once I put some raisins the taste is quite similar. You can also mix the oats with yogurt. No need to cook the oats and make them into warm gooey porridge for them to be healthy.

    Try this - will help with your issues on eggs and porridge:

    1/4 cup of oats
    2 tablespoons of chia seeds/flaxseeds/linseed etc (optional)
    1 egg
    handful of mixed berries
    sprinkle of coconut
    sprinkle of cinnamon
    splash of milk
    teaspoon of honey

    Mix them all in a bowl - 2 minutes in the microwave! Unbelievably tasty - have with a banana, nutritious AND delicious!

    That's where I would have got 70+% pork content. Plus, you're looking at free range for that high a % and with that comes a higher price.

    Not saying it's impossible to get or anything, just that you'd have to be specific about the sausages you get and don't mind parting with a few quid extra over the week.

    90% meat content sausages aren't good. 70% is perfect, you actually need the filler bits to make them sausages and not a cylindrical burger. The filler gets a bit of a hard time but they are actually the crucial part that makes them sausages. Probably will be eaten alive for pointing this out on the nutrition forum, but there you go. That's why sausages aren't considered that great for you. To do them right, you've to be kinda wrong. :P

    For the above reason, no butcher will make more than 70% meat sausages.

    Truly Irish are the easiest to buy high pork content sausages at 82%, but that's still not even that high.

    OP, there's loads of ways of making porridge. What way do you make yours?

    Local butcher near me was offering 90% pork and apple sausages recently

    Nah, the rusk is actually pretty darn crucial to nice sausages, IMO, hence why they're not really that healthy. 70% meat + rusk is pretty much perfect.

    kind of pointless argument since we are discussing the OPs breakfast options and not the recipe for a prefect sausage.

    And I do prefer 40% sausages to higher "quality" ones. maybe I like sawdust.

    back to op.

    A good breakfsat shake imho consists of :
    Protein, some carb and a decent amount of fat.

    I use this formula. milk of some type(whole, coconut, almond)
    A fruit for taste (banana for me usually)
    and a nut butter for the fat.
    This is also a good time to get your dose of flax seeds/hemp seeds etc

    So just pick one from each category and blend. You can also add spinach leaves as they dont really affect the taste but still count as a veg

    could also be that men who dont eat breakfast tend to have high pressure jobs with strict demands on them both physically and nutritionally.
    Some people skip breakfast because they cant manage their time and diet. other skip breakfast because they dont feel hungry.
    only one of those groups is at risk of anything

    I'm going to try a shake with something like thegreatiam said

    With the milk I normal buy the 2% one.. would that do ?.. I might get some coconut milk tho.
    Banana / Orange / Strawberry would will work.. i always have these in the house.
    I never use peanut butter.. or anything like it.. I could get it.. but wanted to ask is there anything i could use in it's place ?
    As for seeds.. I've never used them.. but would add them.

    Do i add ice ?

    Milk. 2% is fine 3% would be better. I wouldn't use orange tho. Orange juice and milk dint play nice
    For peanut butter you want the fat and the proteins and the taste. So substitute with similar. Or just use nuts. Avocado may work

    Seeds are optional. Some people eat a spoonful a day. It just goes well in a shake better than choking down a spoon of dry seeds imho

    Ice inst necessary. This is like a thick shake not juice.

    An apple sliced up and smeared with 30g peanut butter would get you on your way to a nice brekkie. It tastes nicer than it sounds, I promise.

    Stop eating earlier the day before and you should be hungry in the morning.
    OR
    Check the "Bulletproof coffee" thread on here. if you like it, it can provide energy for your workout without raising your insulin like sweet sugary smoothies do - your body remains in fat burning mode it's in when you get up :rolleyes:
