This completely flew beneath my radar:

I'll be interested to see how historically accurate this is (granted I'll need to do a bit of refreshing of my reading first).

I haven't had a chance to see Freeman's film yet as, admittedly, it didn't capture my imagination framing the story around unification via rugby. I shall make an effort to watch it though before this and see what I think.

Invictus wasn't very good for a plethora of reasons; not least because Freeman basically phoned-in a hokey impression of Mandela & offered little else. The rest of the film was a soft-focus look at the unified South Africa in its infancy, with barely anything resembling an edge or tension. Hell, the rugby itself wasn't particularly convincing either.

This Idris Elba vehicle looks a bit more interesting; it certainly appears like it won't shy away from the harsh realities of the ANCs actions during those turbulent years of apartheid, and Elba's accent seems a bit more restrained. He does seem a bit too physical for the role, am surprised he didn't drop some of the weight...

You've confirmed my suspicions that I garnered from the trailers at the time.

I agree this approach looks much more interesting. I'm surprised that with Mandela's recent poor health that this film hasn't featured more in the media.
